If you look at the ballistic's chart I believe the .17 will reach out a bit farther than the .22mag.I have a .22mag(Marlin bolt)I want to get the .17 too

ive got the savage .17 with a BSA sweet 17 6-18 power, i love it, but i think i could of got something better then the BSA, it doesnt seem to hold true over a long period of time. but when mine was sighted in good i would sit and plink pigeons in a field at 180-200 yards, havent had a chance at a yote or a fox yet... i shoot the hornaday bullets, seem to work very well! they are a blast!!!

you need more gun yote's are pretty tough.. just my opion have a friend with a 17 and he wounds more than he kill's, step up to a 222 or 223 or 22-250 -243 the last is hard to beat if it's a little windy. good luck..one shot............

funny this topic appeared, i just started looking into either a .22 .22mag or a 17hmr for plinking and small game. What do u guys like better?

17hmr is deff the way to go for long range plinking and coyote hunting. its one of the flattest shooting cal ever made and it has plenty of punch to take out a coyote if hit in the right spot. my buddy in montana has his sighted in for 500 yards and has taken numerous coyotes from 300-500 yards with it with head shots.

no way that you could kill a yote at 500 yards with the .17... if sighted in at 200 yards it drops 23 inches at 300 yards...if sighted in at 100 yards it drops 36 inches at 300 yards...its only got 32 ft-lb kenetic energy at 400 yards...a 5 MPH wind at 300 yards will push the bullet 20 inches!!!! i think he is blowing a little smoke up your ass

i have a marlin .17 hmr and it is awesome. it shoots really far and accurate. havn't had a chance at a fox or coyote yet but have shot numerous squirrel and birds. it definantly has enough power to kill anything mentioned.

If your shooting larger game, meaning Coyotes the 17 is a poor choice. Look at a ballistics chart and the 17 has NO mass. I use a 25.06 for shots to 600 yards. I still have 4 ft. of bullet drift on a windy day with 120's. 17 is good for prairie dogs at 300 yards when missing dosn't mean shit. My 22 mag will kill to 100 yards accurately. I have made shots to 150 yards, but can't disclose what the game was I shot. 22-250 is a GREAT gun for dogs and coyotes also. My 2 c
What you have to remember is is the bullet weight, verses wind, elevation, and charge. There again, look at a ballistic chart, it's a easy choice once you see what your caliber of choice really does at 200,300,400 etc good luck

I hunt arctic wolves and wolverine here up north and weapon of choice is a .223 ruger mini 14. Wide open space here on the tundra so they run away fast and got to get in close range which is the fun part because they are constantly running and you have to take a leading shot, cruising on snowmobile chasing them and getting within range maybe 25-150 yards we normally get into. My father has a 17 hmr and takes many shots to kill one of those so he mainly uses it for caribou. The 17 might be good within 250 yards anything beyond that maybenot much takedown power. Don't know, not really familiar with the 17. I'll stick with my 223 thak you. And for musk-oxen/caribou I also have a 60-70# bow but its been a while since I used it.
