We have a 2000 Arctic Cat ZL500 EFI sitting in our garage. We want to sell it but want it to run first. Last year it acted up and we garaged it. Symptoms are it will start up and idle but it boggs down and dies when any sort of throttle is given to it. It also boggs so bad that it backfires. I havn't done much to try and diagnose it but need help on what I should look at. Spark plugs were changed and that is about it before I garaged it.
What should I look at? I have been told Injectors but at $250 a peice I would like to know how to test them.
Looking to sell it for about $1200 so putting a lot of money into it would not be benificial.
I don't really want to take it to the dealership and get raped if there is easy things to look at first.
Thanks

There is lots on this forum regarding this problem on these sleds. The first thing to try is to unplug the Throttle Position Sensor and see if that helps. The easiest way to do this is to take the handlebar cover off and unplug the wires coming from the kill switch, if this fixes your problem, you can bend one of the probes back (I don't know whihc one though) so that you plug it back in and retain your kill switch. If this doesn't fix yuor problem, you will have to do more diagnosing, ie. plugs, plug caps, stator, ECU, etc.
If you do a search, you'll find out more detailed info on how to unplug the TPS.

I doubt it is a fuel injector but keep an open mind at this point it could be several different things.
Things to check:
unplug the wires going to the kill switch as sled321 mentioned
compression - if you dont have a tester pull the y pipe and look for piston/ring damage - inspect the pipe and can for a rodent nest while you are at it
check the spark plugs and boots
reeds and flanges for the throttle bodies
fuel pressure if you have a gauge, make sure the vent hose is not snagged or clogged on the fuel tank, it would pay to pull the pump out if you don't have a gauge and make sure the fuel pump screens are not clogged at least.
Check the airbox and boots going to the throttle bodies
Check the ground coming off the ECU going to the steering support as well as the ground coming off the recoil to the exhaust can
If everything checks out then you will need to start looking at the stator. I can get you the specs if you need it for the stator as well as the rest of the electrical system.

Thanks fellas. For the throttle safety I forgot that I did disconnect the kill switch totally and it did not help. I just need to go out and tinker with it I guess.
Did a search and every problem seems to be a little different that is why I posted again.
Just need to get it out of the garage is all. Should sell it as is and be done with the Arctic Cats all together.
