i'm planning a multi day snowmobiling trip for this upcoming winter, and i'm trying to figure out the best time to go. we're probably going to the medway area. i found out that maine schools have their feb vacation between the 18th and 22nd, so i want to avoid that week. i was thinking the following week, potentially the 28th and 29th, into the weekend. i was looking around for websites with good detailed information about winter weather in maine at the end of feb, but i couldnt find anything. typically, is there still a lot of snow on the ground? or would we be better off going before the little kiddies have their vacation?

thanks for your help

Personally i would go before school vacation if thats possible. The trails would be pretty beat that next weekend if we didn't get any snow after school vacation.

I have always taken the last week of Jan and the last week of Feb off for sledding. The weather is cold and the trails are fine. I wouldn't pick those weeks if it sucked....

Don't worry about it. There'll be plenty of snow and plenty of smooth trails the week before or after the kiddies play.

I went to school in Pittsfield one year(1970) , 4 in of frozen crap on frozen ground all season, 10 below all the time. Another year I went up to Spyder lake ice fishing. 55 deg. for 2 days. all the snow melted on top of the 2plus ft. of ice. Could of used a jet ski. Then it was 10 deg the rest of the week and fresh snow. Last year went to Moosehead for the last week on Feb. Little snow but we still put on big miles every day. Single numbers for the temp. all day. Very cold at night. And yes one Feb. it snowed so much we were getting stuck all the time. If you find a web site that will have the weather for this Feb. ask them for the lottery number for me will you. I need a big score. Most places you stay will work with you if there is no snow. Refunds or return of deposit or change of date. Maine is the best.

My wife and I do the same thing.... Ride before the vacation if it is possible in your situation. The trails are run hard during the vacation and depending on the season. Snow may not replace what's been trashed.

Also, the weather is usually pretty cold. On average, for the past few years temps have been 0-10* on some mornings with an average in the teens to low 20s during the day. Very pleasant if your dressed appropriately. Just wear layers and you'll be set for all temps. As mentioned, I have seen warm trends as well.

Hope this helps. Maybe I'll see you on the trails. We usually ride between Millinocket, Caribou, and Ft. Kent during the week!

Bring on the Snow! beer_cheers.gif

well it seems like the popular opinion is to go before the school vacation, which certainly makes the most sense. it sucks not knowing what kind of winter we're in store for

its maine, ya never know whats gunna happen up here.!!
what?trail?
best riding last couple years has been end of march beginning of april !!!

this past school vaca week trail conditions were horrible as well as the year before if i remember right

I've been going the school vacation week every year for the past 15 in the Caribou area, it's too damn big up there to be crowded.

after talking things over today, i think my friends and i are leaning towards heading up on feb 6th, and then sledding the 7th, 8th and possibly 9th. that'll get us up there before the young ones have their vacation time.

here's to hoping that a)i can get the time off (the next 6 months will be uber busy at my company) and b)there's plenty of snow to ride on!

February is where its at in Maine. Perfect month for riding.

During maine school vacation I go to NH since thats where we usually ride anyway but there is no one out there at that time and the trails don't get beat up since NH kids are in school and their vacation is the next week. This year though we are going to canada I can't wait.

I've seen winta's where there wasn't much snow up here ( the real northern ME ;-) ) till the 15th of Februray ,,, so if ya gonna plan your only week of vacate I'll suggest the last weeks of Feb and the first two of March ta make damn sure ya got good conditions !!! Them be the best we guts !!! Snow, cold, wide and fast !!!!

We always go the first week of Feb and always had great conditions.

Snow should be as good in early February as about any other time of winter/early spring. Although the snow pack may not be quite as deep as later in the winter, not as many riders have arrived yet so trails should be in great shape (including riding in/out of town!). And usually not the deep deep COLD then either - unless you do not mind riding in -20 or worse cold! Just our 2 cents.....
