Howdy,

I am from Texas A&M University and on their Formula SAE team. Last year we built a car using an Aprilia SXV 550 engine and won SAE West Competition in California. You can go to the following website to see more about our car and past cars: www.tamusae.org.

This year the team is discussing using the Phaser Genesis 80FI engine. I was hoping someone on this forum might have more information about the engine that is not available on the Yamaha website. I would like to know any problems that have been experienced with the engine. Your thoughts on using it in our application (not in cold conditions). We also need information specific to the engine dimensions. If anyone has torn down an engine and could give us info such as cam profile, valve diameter, etc. let me know.

Another thing if anyone knows of a dealer ship that is friendly and would not mind helping us out let me know. We need all the info we can get.

You can email me at mustang65_jww@yahoo.com

Thanks,

W. Wilson

The engine performance suffers in warmer temperatures.

Also it is by the far hottest running naturally aspirated engine I have ever seen. There is a reason Yamaha cools the exhaust with snow.

It overheats even with a heat exchanger and a radiator.

I got to UBC okanagan in kelowna bc...2009 will be our first year entering the fsae competition, we are also considering using the genesis 80....we think it would have a competitive edge over other engines because it is specifically designed to be paired with a CVT transmission, and also because it is a 2 cylinder 500 cc engine that runs at a lower rpm than a street bike which means it would suck less air

any additional info would be apreciated

I would suggest looking on Totally Yamaha... www.ty4stroke.com

You'll find lots of information in the Phazer section, as there are alot of Phazer owners on that site. The are also a couple of people who work in service at various dealerships, on that site.

You could also try Chris Reid at Yamaha Canada Snowmobile Blog.

I am unaware of any similar Yamaha USA site. This guy is a Senior Vice President or something like that. I have found it more effective communicate with him, than Yamaha Canada, over questions my dealer can't answer.

Good Luck

Also the only, engine problems I am aware are of a few cracked manifolds, and more recently some kind of connectiong rod failure. Either Way, you'll find lots of information on TY

These engines run over 11 000 RPM. That is only slightly lower than some street bikes. And volumetric efficiency determines air draw, not RPM. You want 80 hp? You need 80 hp worth of air...... BRP makes a low RPM V twin engine for sleds though.
