Trail is open at first snow, just not the State trails
Why are so many people misinformed about this? This type of thinking gets trails shut down or closed....just look at the section of trail over by Gwinn that the landowner has decided not to renew the lease with the club because of attitudes like this. Just because it snows early doesn't mean the entire trail system is open, ESPECIALLY where they cross private property. Buying a trail permit doesn't give anyone the right to trespass. State trails can be ridden on if it snowed in October, but if it comes up to private property then it's OFF LIMITS. TASA, Newberry has this problem every year because one of their leases stipulates that the trail in that particular section is not available until the muzzleloading deer season is over, which this season will be December 17th. If gates are closed or snow fence is up, stay out.
DNR will not reimburse clubs for grooming before Dec 1st and after Mar 31st unless they have filed for an extension. Private land leases generally fall in between those dates as well.
I like the way Ontario does it.....they're not open until they say they're open....plain and simple.
