I'm looking for a few more peeps that ride in the U.P. and out West.......
I usually ride the U.P. (no on trail, all off trail) 2 weekends a month and hit the west once a month. I only know a few people who have the sled and experience to ride in the U.P. like I do and my buds who ride out west won't go to the U.P.
I will be posting here when I will be going and if you are interested in a ride, chime in!

I'm in Braham, MN and would love to make some trips on the weekends to the UP. Just let me know when you plan on heading. When we have gone we only ride the trail to town to get gas after that its all off trail.

Keep posting when you are going, I am hoping to make a couple trips to the UP along with the mountain trips we already have planned. Cooke the week of New Years, Colorado the end of Feb. and if you look at the "HCS out west trip" thread I am trying to get that going the 30th of Jan to Feb 3rd. Money is always an issue, so car pooling, hotel sharing is ok with me.

I will be in Cooke for new years also, it's the big SW party!
I did see the post of a HCS ride out west, I would be interested but it's hard for me to plan trips, i run my own company and the customers dictate the schedule.... My other riding buddy (mmwildman or geno on SW) is in the same boat, so we even go to cooke for a long weekend (take one day off) if the snow is good!
Bring on winter!

I am definitely up for the UP... off trail is perfect and up for out west whenever my schedule permits. It is a bit of a haul for me from IL to meet up in MN though so I'd need some notice. Get in touch whenever you want to hit the UP and I am game for sure. I like the Rockland area the best for off trail.

I'm awaiting the call that the new iron is in too... We should get together and ride in Cooke for turkey day, we are staying at the Alpine as I have two nights free (usually stay at the Antlers w/ Bill and Kay)
Olaf,
I would like to ride the Rockland area, i usually never get East of lake gogebic........ Maybe we can show eachother around a bit.

I'll be getting into a lot more offtrail this year for sure. Last year I'd explore off of the trail for a ways but didn't venture too far since I didn't have a GPS. I know some guys now that do a lot of off trail in that area and would maybe be able to setup something. Keep in touch as the season gets closer. I just bought Slydog Powder Hounds for my M6 so I am ready.

Do you do a leave friday night or sat and back sunday night. That works good for me. I plan to be in Cooke for turkey day also but will be with the girlfriend, grandparents are taking the kids, so we probably won't be off trail much. Any suggestions for GPS radios, I've been looking at them.

Yes, usually on the weekends... I usually go up on Sat. a.m. and come home sunday p.m. The thing I dislike about the U.P. is lodging, you can't get it on a days notice. I found Porcupine lodge this summer and want to see if I can't get in with them well (the prob is they require a two day stay). The lodge looks great, they rent condo's that sleep something like up to 8 (i think they mean 4 couples...), kitchen, hot tub, washer dryer, and it's about the same price as a hotel per night.
Cooke has quite a bit of snow for October

There are a bunch of places to stay in the UP... John Dee has a good list as well as a few others I know who are always open. I will be in Cooke City from Nov. 28th through December 2nd if you guys are still there.
As for a GPS.. I am just going to get a eTrex that tracks where you've been. It is cheap and it works great with a handlebar mount.

I just found this....
Are they for real????I think I might have to do some real scouting and see if I can't get my trips paid for. $300 a day seems really spendy to me!!!!

I am trying to decide when to book a room in cooke for turkey day. Is it usually busy? I could easily go a couple of weekends to the UP. If you go off trail most of the time my M6 should be fine. A group of buddies got a guide the first time they went to the UP and said it was worth it. My new neighbors say they have been going up there for a couple years, I'll have to talk to them about where to sled and places they stay. Personally I have never been up there, made one trip to the Snowies and said forget it. Now I have kids and weekends work better than 3-7 day trips.

I would do it with a group of guys just to find some cool play areas. It is pricey and my first thoughts, a bit nuts, but if I was able to find some awesome off trail I think it would be worth it.

I don't think you will have trouble finding lodging up to a week in advance, but the past two years there has been more and more people out there early in the season. I'm calling out there today, i have a two night stay at the Alpine for free. We usually stay at the Antlers Lodge. I do have to warn you that some of the restraunts and bars aren't open like they are in the middle of winter, so you might want to bring some food.
Maybe I can be your guide, I'll cut you a deal

The U.P. is great, just not the open meadows and hills like out west... The snow doesn't set up either, so the pow stays fresh as it doesn't get windblown.

Well the snow situation isn't looking good for a t-day ride

I really hope some good moisture and cold temps move in, I want to pick up the new ride (in cooke) and see how it does on the snow (i'm hearing good things

) I also need to get it home to do some mods before new years.
It does look like some snow is moving in, but nothing major yet.....

BB, it's a fun machine set up from the factory, but it sounds like yami might have left a little of performance in the bag w/ some bad clutching to not hit full RPM's to save gas w/ the little tank. We get about 5 inches in MN so i took it for a spin and it hits 9100 rpms so i will try it w/ the hight elevation set up in MI and let you know how it works. I think this sled will run with the 800's with big tracks once set up right. IMO
I'm headed to the UP to ride HOPEFULLY friday and sat. (if not, then sat and sun), the snow may not be worthy for off trail stuff around Merriwether, so i may head further (new territory to me) so if anyone is interested, post up!

Leaving for Cooke on Friday afternoon, see a lot of you out there. I ride a white (40th) nytro w/ black snow eliminators, nice sounding pipe LOL, and red klim gear. Stop me, say hi and lets have a beer!
Drive safe!

so u guys must ride in the western up and the keewenaw hey? Cause where i am has some decent off trail riding for about a day after a snow storm, then its all packed down, and when it is fresh, we can ride through it with 121X1in tracks no problem, it sucks
