Hey all you guys that live in and ride in wyoming....

I might be moving from upstate new york to take a job with wyoming cat. I dont know exactly what location though. So I have a few questions.

Where are the best spots to ride and or live?
How much snow and for how long?
Are there trail systems or is it mostly back country riding?
Do you have to have a long track mountin sled or will my xc with a 1.5" lug track be ok?

Thanks for any comments or info.

Not a bad spot for riding in Wyoming IMOP. My favorite place is the Snowies down by Cheyenne and Laramie. Riding there typically seems to be from Nov-June on good years. I live in ID but am only an hour and a 1/2 from Jackson so my riding will be done mostly in Alpine area. You have Togowotee, the big horns, etc etc etc. Trail systems are weak and only used to access the back county unless you are close to Yellowstone. You are in need of a new sled also. Sell it before you come as non mtn sleds are non desirable and rather hard to get rid of. To get a short track in some of these areas from a dealer it is almost special order as all they stock is mtn sleds. Where ever you move in Wyoming I would say you are only a couple hour drive or less from some awesome riding.

Im from Groveland a little town in the boonies. It's about an 1 1/2 hours east of Buffalo and about an hour south of Rochester. Just on the eastern edge of the big lake effect snow that we get.

I make the trip out to snowy range around the laramie area about every other year, great on trail and off trail riding. I only have a 1.25" track (flatlander sled) but the trails are great and you can get off some with it, just be ready to dig it out if you get too brave.

X-New Yorker here. Anywhere in the western part of the state. Even eastern Idaho. Get rid of that sled before hand and go to atleast 700cc 2" track 151 or bigger if you are serious about really exploring the northern rockies. The Greater Yellowstone area has 1000's of miles of trails in a 150 mile radius. We ride 3-4 days a week untracked. Check out the teton/island park region.

What about re-geraring and putting a 144 on it? Would it be worth the time and effort or just ditch it and buy a new rmk?

Dude, not worth it... dump the short and go with a long... much easier than trying to jack around converting....

I live in Rock Springs, 140 miles East is the Snowies, 135 miles West is Uintahs South of Evanston, a few more in to Utah has a ton more riding, 130 miles North/West Kemmerer, 140 miles North Pinedale, 175 to Jackson and Togwatee just around the corner from there. Just follow the storms as they blow through.

It(Rock Springs) is a shithole but it is my shithole, right in the middle of the best riding in the US.

Good luck and welcome to Wyoming, save the shorty for the June Spring rides, buy a longtrack bigbore for the altitude which averages 8-10,000 feet. Buy a shovel, beacon and probe, most of us require them in our groups. We have a ton of trails but most of the areas are huge for backcountry riding. I have ridden from Halloween till the 4th of July but is best December through April/May.
