OK so I have a 800 and I was thinking of sending in my muffler to BMP for their stock muffler adjustment a long with a couple of other things. I was thinking of the mods in the following order.

BMP mod to the pipe
Y pipe
Timing key

At what point would need a boondocker?? I would to keep the mods simple but I would like to have something different from everyone else, ie alittle more rumble.

with the key i would say definately yes plus you will need premium fuel also.

You wouldn't need a boondocker with those mods.

well any others??

why not email bikeman?
brokenwing
Already discussed it with Bikeman and was told that right off the top I needed a Boondocker.

Seemed like they want to sell the booner units to much.

Yep need a boondocker & egt's to dial it in.

not to sound like an ass here but it IS there job to tell you when you would need a boondocker with their mods. ive never known any of the reputable companies to push product onto their customers if its not needed. JMO

Well machz1 it is my job to check and verify different things before I spend my money just because someone says you just NEED to have this. I double check and ask questions, I would bet the majority of the posts are people asking for second opinions.

It seems pretty strange that even with a simple pipe change I would need a boondocker. I understand to dial it in and get the most out of the pipe it could be useful. But at a 4-6hp mod would make the machine lean to the point it needs to be remapped seems strange since it does not seem that there are that many people running booners.

As a side note, the same person stated that I needed another part. That part many people and even dyno charts have shown not to improve performance, hence and red flag. So here I am HCS posting a question.

your NOT JUST adding a pipe! your adding a pipe, key and y pipe which is a huge increase in performance from stock calibrations, just a y pipe and pipe you probably wouldnt need to but with the key in there i would add a boondocker for saftey, you say it seems strange, well no it doesnt at WOT these things are already rerally lean in order to pass emissions now, down low youd be alright as they are rich but midrange and topend your asking for a burndown, take my advice or not i dont care you asked i offered and my motto is when in doubt play it safe.

I'm only running a mod air box on a stock 700 and it ran like shit till I got a boondocker ie: lean. What do you think it will do with your mods? Melt a piston maybe? Keep in mind it's a 2 stroke and it needs fine tuning.

my '05 f7 i ran a 2 deg key and ran it over 2500 miles on 87 octane and no boondocker. but i also never changed nothing on the exhaust system other than a stinger. i found a timing key really cleaned up the bottom end throttle response. i would not advise over 2 deg without premium. with pipe and ypipe a boondocker wouldnt be necessary but it would ensure you have your sled running the best it can with the mods.

Meaning that if I only did a pipe mod would I need a boondocker. I did not mean that I was going to do all these. Other wise I would have asked if i do all these mods would I did a boondocker.

On a 700 I'd say no BD box needed.

On the new 800 I'd be very scared to run it with those mods and no BD box...yikes.

I have an 04 F-7 with timing key, BMP pipe mod, air intake, y pipe, can, 06 ecu, and some bullseyes and I have had no problems. Sled has 4700 miles on it and still has all it's compression. Now with the 800, if you do get the boondocker, you will be safe, and get most of your money back if you sell it. If I had to do it all over again, I would get the boondocker. The bottom line is, you can get away without one, but you are spoending all that dough, so get your results faster by getting the box.

I"m really surprized BMP didn't suggest there clutch kit. That would be my first recommendation.
brokenwing
We only discussed motor mods but I am planning a getting a clutch kit from them.

I have 2* timing key, fuel reducer, bmp single pipe,d&d y pipe, and had 0 problems with mine. Sled runs perfect with great piston wash. 2000 trouble free miles. Now I would agree with a bonndocker you could tune it in better, and know right where your running.
cmscat50
Once again.

700 no boondocker
800 boondocker....period.
