Just started to figure out where we are going to hunt this year.....for those that hunt deer and not just bucks Antlerless permits go on sale for private land owners the 16th of August.
I'd be getting excited but I don't think I'll bowhunt this year........no where to go.

been looking at the aerial photos and topo maps pretty hard this past month or so and ive been out for a few walks in a couple new pieces i am going to hunt this year that have a couple booners in them! ive got a couple spots picked out but i dont have any stands up yet which doesnt really matter cause most of the time i use my climber anyway. i actually just came in from shooting my bow a few minutes ago, its the first time ive picked it up since i shot my turkey with it this spring.

Ive been seeing plenty of bucks where i hunt down here.. Bear baiting starts the 28th so we will be doing some scouting up north too..
snopro703, i see you are from southern Maine, so arent i.. I live in Westbrook, how about you?

Already started the scouting and planning! Putting in a food plot this year for the first time too, that ought to be interesting. I've got poor PH levels in the spot so i'm going to have to Lime the crap out of it. Because of that, i may not get any decent growth this year. But next year should be awesome. Still though the area is good and few nice buck have been spotted and video'd. So i'm DEFINITLY getting the itchy trigger finger too.

i use a 20' 2-man ladder stand and it is uncomfortable as hell. id rather have a single climber that is a lot more comfortable. i also use a pop up blind sometimes. I use a reflex grizzly.

yep many good places to hunt if you do some home work. urban bucks are savy and don't fall to easy for sloppy hunting practices. you have to bring the whole bag of tricks to bag the big boys.

Holy shit man, i guess im in the wrong spot!! Oh i know there are some big deer here, i shot a 220 pound 10 pointer in 05 in windham that scored 135, but in westbrook, weve seen some decent deer this summer but nothing that big!!!

what does your dad charge for a bear or a deer?

just reloaded my friends baits near my cabin in glennie michigan (n.e. side of the lower). they're all getting hit hard. one has tracks of a very big one hanging around. another has light brown hair stuck in the dark side of the scratching tree that is freshly made and has 9-10in tracks left behind so it's a shooter. it's his first tag, so i can't wait to see his face after the first sitting. it's public land so a trail cam would grow leggs if found and that sucks.

yz, how did you end up doing last night? my buddy hit one yesterday with his bow and we tracked it from 815 to midnight last night and then they went back out and tracked it for another 3 or 4 hours this morning but the blood just ended up slowly dying out. it was his first time ever bear hunting and his first time ever shooting at anything with a bow so all in all he had a pretty decent night. we are not exactly sure where he hit it but it was dark blood so i figure he hit back a bit and we ended up finding half his arrow.

Probably a muscle hit.. Couldve hit it too high too.. You hit a bear too high, or even in the liver, they wont always die, and can go forever and ever.. Believe me, ive been around bear hunting and seen a lot of bears shot, and tracked a lot. If its a big one you better hope for a pass through, because the fat will plug up the hole in no time and there goes the blood trail..
Personally i didnt see anything besides a cow moose..
My dad shot a big one, pushing 300 pounds. We got pictures of them but he has the camera, ill post some when he comes home tomorrow..
Another guy that goes with us shot one about 140-150ish.
And another guy that goes with us, his kid wounded a small one that we never found..
Needless to say, we werent back at camp until 130 this morning, we tracked the wounded one for a long ways, and decided to wait until the morning to look (they looked but lost the blood), the 140 pounder the guy shot with a bow and we tracked that for about 200 yards (went in a big circle), and my dads dropped right at the bait.. I havent talked to him yet about on how much it weighed, ill find out tomorrow.
Another guy that hunts with us shot a small one tonight..
Ill be back up on saturday hunting..
