Hello all,
I've just purchased a 1996 XLT Touring and from a dead stop if you give it a little too much gas you can hear the track slip over the drive shaft. I've tightened the track to the point of where it's too tight and the track will still slip. I've checked the chaincase and adjusted but the track still slips. Have any other owners seen or have this type of problem and what have you done to correct it. Begining to wonder if I have to live with this.
Thanks in advance,
John

Check the bearings in the chaincase and driveshafts. My 95 xlt did the same thing just before the chaincase exploded.

how much sage does it have in the middle of the track, meaning from the track to the slides with it off the ground? If you have less then 1" take a close look at the track drivers and make sure there ok! I dont know about your sled exactly but its possible to have 2 or 4 drivers... as a rule of thumb more power more drives... If those two check out you will more then likely have to dig a little deeper look at the hole skid frame for signs of broken welds or parts moveing that shouldnt! If you still havent come up with any real problems it could be the track is streching and just has reached the end of its service life!

Maybe the drive sprockets are turning on the shaft?? It is possible, I have heard of that happening! The sprockets could have cracked over time and split to the point where they actually skip on the driveshaft!! Just an idea??? Rammer!!

Thanks guys! I'll take a look at the chain case and drive system. Thanks again for the good advice!
