taking the trip to NY here in a couple weeks to hopefully pick up a new sled, '05 iq 440 with an '01 600 ves motor installed. i am new to these iq's so i really dont know much about them at all. is there are certain places i should check before i go spending the money, then find out something was wrong, i just didnt look in the right spot. gotten screwed over before, and just looking to save myself the grief and aggrivation. thanx for any help/info you can give me

If you are buying team yardsales sled, it is worth well what he is asking for it. You should have no problem spending the money on that sled.

Here is a list of things to look for.
IT may be a little long for some but an '05 that was raced should be looked at really close.
One thing I need to add to this list is to look closely at the steering post nut. There is a Heim Joint and nut that mounts the bottom of the steering post to the bulkhead, look at this closely for cracks, loose nut and/or evidence of repair.

thanx akiqpilot and motosled, knew someone would be able to help me out, lol. so that takes are of the sled chassis wise, what about motor wise. is there anything specific to look for motorwis, especially seeings how this set-up is not stock. i know motor swaps are a PIA on the cat snopros, been there done that. i know we had to add extra cooling and new wiring harnesses and then some cooling systems were better than the other, and this that and every other thing. what are some thing to look out for to know that this thing has been put together right? i have heard that this is a very nice sled, but i just dont want any surprises. and yes, it is team yardsales sled

You will want to look closely at the mounting of the VES motor and ensure that the proper Clutch C-to-C distances are exactly 10.625". The sled sould have an 1104 or 1114 Drive belt. Both those belts are the same length, just the 1114 is a little more heavy duty.
Normally the VES is spaced up .750" and tilted forward approx. .250" to get the need clearance between the jackshaft and the bell mouth of the carbs. A custom motor plate may eliminate the need for these spacers.
If the sled does not have an airbox you should look closely at the underside of the air filters. They can rub the jackshaft and cause big problems, like holes in th filters and debris in the motor.
Like mentioned above, if this is Team Yardsales sled it likely already has the proper spacers needed to position the motor properly.
The motor should have somewhere between 120 & 130 PSI of compression.
Ask what gearing the sled has??? A decent trail gear is 22/43 but that won't have a lot of top speed. Gears are easy to change.
Clutching is fairly easy on this sled, if it isn't already clutched properly it will be easy to get right.
Wiring is plug and play on this motor transplant. there shouldn't be any extra wires or loose nonstock wires anywhere in thes set-up. The only extra wire will be a ground wire to kill the motor and it is about 6" long and under the CDI. All other wires should look like they were factory installed.
The 440 fuel pump will work just fine, if it still has a 440 pump that is not a problem.
Many '05's are starting to show drive axle issues, the outer drivers get loose and slide outward toward the tunnel, not a big problem but look closely here and ask if they have moved around.
Look closely at the A-Arm/Spindle area, these big ball joints get loose and the wiper/dampener material falls out of the big joint and the front end gets sloppy. You will need to tip the sled on its side to detect this problem.
