Im doing a apprenticeship for pipefitter/welder. it's pretty good getting 20 an hour which is 70 % of jman. plus full bennys and pension. just apply and try to line stuff up befor you come out, ledcor, flint, are huge then all the rig places in fall. i work for the union and havent gone more then 24 hours without a job and there is endless oppurtunity here so many choices. i know your from manitoba so first step is putting down the bong you will probably have to clear a piss test. if your drug free all the best. but dont waist time i'll be 24 and dual ticketed and could make 130-140 an hour with a welding truck im just saying im glad i didnt waste time.

My friend with benefits is up in Ft-Mac working, been there 2 years.
Working as a vac-truck operator, where he is now it is a day rate of $425+, he gets living quarters in the camp.
First month I knew him he showed me his pay stub it was over 9K

I'll start by saying research the move before you go. Remember the cost of living out there is also through the roof. (so are the drinking, gambling, hookers for camps, and towns full of single, bored, young guys with money to burn.) I'm told by a friend in Calgary that unless you are living in a camp, you have to have a permanent address to legally work in Alberta. That may have changed but it's worth looking into. If it hasn't, what will it cost vs. your income. Remember Ft. Mac is the only city in Canada to have a Tim Horton's go under, because they couldn't afford the wages. Mc Donald's starts at $14.00 hr. Do you think you'll buy a happy meal for under $10.00?
Don't get me wrong Manitoba has a lot of room for improvement, but that's what we get for voting NDP.
My point of this post isn't to piss on anyone's dreams as much as it is to say take a long hard look (that's free) before you make a costly investment.
Many people have done very well in AB. If you go I wish you well.

2 feet and a heart beat is all you need to work here. and yeah you can make more then 18 drive trucks up to 35 an hour in no time. dont get it all mixed up theres girls even in fortmac. yeah a house now is about 430 average but who cares i made 1400 a month in winnipeg here i can make 4-8 grand a month and i pay 500 or 600 for rent no big deal. 1400 - 0 or 6000 - 500 i like 5500 in the bank.

Two of my son's friends went to ft/mac welding, it cost them 3800 a month in rent to stay in a two bedroom duplex, they only stayed one month. Alberta is to expensive to live in.

Thats Y u need to stay in a camp, or have the company pay for housing. FT Mac this is a must, GP has calmed down a bit. Ft. St John - Camps. Basically don't go to AB unless u have a place to live. My Bro has been in Ft Mac for a few yrs and without the company condo, he wouldn't be there.

So did you go or not?
In all honesty, southern saskatchewan is the place to be if you are interested in the oil patch.
The virden area is also hopping but don't bother applying if you don't have experience.
