I bought a leftover 05 ZR9 standard last October. I put 1300 miles on it during the 06/07 season and absolutely loved it. By far my favorite sled. It is all stock, including the clutching. I did add a torque arm, and a tether switch, both a must as far as I am concerned. After reading all the horror stories on here and Arctic Chat, I bought the 10.4 secondary, D&D shift assist and cat's orange secondary spring. Well I wanted a standard of comparison; stock vs. the clutching mods. To date I have had no reason to install any of the clutching mods. This sled is an absolute animal. 1300 miles on the original belt. I have not had any belt slip issues, clutches always run cool to warm. Yet to find the clutches so hot that you could not hold you hand on them after long lake runs and drag racing. Everything I have lined up against has watched my snow flap go by, Yami 4-strokes, F7's, ZRT800's etc. I have not run a Mach, 03 ZR9 or T-cat yet. (Do not know if I can hold them 3 sleds off) I have seen 110 MPH on the GPS regularly.
The suspension is on the soft side but can handle most trail chop under 2 to 3' (just bought 4 snopro shocks & springs for mine). The ZR900 handles like it is on rails. Much more forgiving than a firecat IMO. (I have an 06 F5 also). No need to waste money on after market skis. You just need a good wearbar, 7 or 9" Shaper bars IMO. I will be looking into some powervalve shims before next season also. Overall I think they are great sleds, very dependable, and pretty good on gas. I would not hesitate to buy another ZR900.

I agree with almost all of what was said !! I liked my 05-900 so much I went out and found a left over for this year ! I have run all of the big sleds from a t-cat to the new 4 strokes !! My ZR 900 is the bomb ........... This was the 1st sled I left a lone -stock motor and clutching --it was FAST -- hole shot and top end !! I heard all of the BS about the clutch --I for one do not believe it !! RUN IT --it will not disappoint !! The only thing I changed was the skis -- I put a set of C@A pros on it !!Once I put 192 studs in the track --it needed some help in the steering to compensate !! That was my only complaint--but I caused the problem with all of those studs !! But man does it hook !!!!! I just love seeing the skis off the ground when you do a 70-80 mile an hour roll on !! Your buddy's will get sick of passing them with skis off the ground !!! LOVE THAT OLD SCHOOL --- ZR ---- Not a believer in the snopro--you will loose top speed --good for hole shot -off trail - but on trail--go with the standard -- stud it and rip it !! Depending on your size put a set of heaver springs in the ass end !!!

Theirs a simple fix to the clutch problems #1 engine torque arm but most important and many times overlooked is the clutch & engine alignment ! Yes thats the fix, most came way off from the factory and were sold that way. Ive seen many spending $$$$ on secondary clutches and weights and springs and only get minor results. Maybe the 2004's needed the heavier weights and spring witch was in arctic cats bullentins but that all the 2004's needed all others need the alignmet done and thats it...

I have an 05 standard and love it! All stock except for apv shims- I just wanted insurance. I have no problem what so ever with the belt getting hot.

Alignment of clutches was way off on a few of the ones i worked on. Only ran stock a few times.Modified (if done right) are really fun also. I have a cpr clutch kit for a stocker 4 sale. on my 04 stock it ran 116.

Alingment was an issue but as far as being a good factory setup its not. The white secondary spring sucks, I would invest in a shift- assist and while you there an almond D and D secondary spring, it holds the belt without too much tension at trail speeds, just my opinion...
I have one I order in 04 have tried alot clucth kits my opinion is it is a very nice trail sled is fast to me no, it is a aninal out of the hole than it is over put heaver wieghts in a stiff secondary spring shift ass. from d&d and put the bottle on it with a single pipe stock muffler take the shelf out of the air box natural a good set studs is a must

I've got an '04 ZR900 EFI std,, thats been upgraded with Sno-Pro springs all around and remote rez clicker shocks on the front AND rear,, kept the 1" std track with 192 Woodys 1.450 Goldiggers.
The clutching is HeelClicker 2pds in the primary and the 10.4" Secondary with the updated 50/38 helix with the stock White spring,, just preloaded with an extra 2 turns of preload and the plastic sleeve shortened by 1/2". Also installed a Sno-Tech torque arm.I did buy the ACT align bar,,,golly those clutches were off!,, had to shim the secondary OUT buy .250",,, NO MORE BELT PROBS. SLed will twist the speedo to straight down in seconds with no hesitation. Just too much fun. snap

I picked up a 2005 EFI Sno Pro last fall from one of my riding partners and the few times I got out last winter were AWESOME!!! The sled is all stock with 192 studs and 9" Shaper Bars. I'm 6'3 260 and the guy I got it from is a little bigger so the Sno Pro is a must. Even with my gord, I clocked in at 110 mph on the lake. The sled is an absolute animal on the trails and corners like its on rails. I haven't met powder that has slowed me down either with the 150 hp and sno pro paddles. The first time I was out on it I got blisters on my hands b/c the sled pulls so hard. I would definately reccomend it and would not hestitate to buy it again!

The sled "strained" to get anything over 95-ish,,, needle would just barely go over 100 on the gauge, and then the belt would flip over.
Did the total clutch re-do including the alignment and thats when it came to life. So from barely 100 to easily straight down,, its gotta be about 10-15 mph,,, VERY noticable throughout the powerband. snap
