Hey guys i'm going to be buying a 91 Formula Plus this Saterday, It has everything on it..i was woundering if these are good sleds? any problems i should be awear of?
thanks!

From what I have seen and felt riding them is. They are very heavy. Nose wants to hit every side of the bump and they will ware you out. Not to be the bear of bad news. but if you are going to buy that vintage I would look at an 92 polaris xcr 440. Very light they have good suspenion and you can ride them all day and have a great time. I myself Road that little 440 and none of the bigger sleds could keep up. Hell i never been passed by one on the trail and i have past plenty with the little 440. Well i hope that helps.

I had a 93 Mach and the 670 was a great motor and you know suspension wise for the time they weren't bad, cornered like it was on rails and would cat walk till the cows came home. I had a 9700 buzzard and the 521 was solid as well so if the price is right then why not. BTW talk to Gerard Karpik of Fast, he designed the M-10 for the PRS chassis. But stock rear end ,well that's why we always said PRS meant prick 'recked my spine.

Thanks guys, that helps alot, do they break alot? i'm coming up in years..lol you should see what i'm riding now.

Don't let anyone discourage you about the plus!! That's a good sled, one of the baddest in its day!!! I've ridden plenty of them and yes they are heavy, but its got a solid motor and very reliable!!
Ball Buster
91s are slow 88s are the fastest.

I will agree. skidoo has a good power plant but don't let that be the reason you buy it. heavy sleds are alot of work to ride. I still think your bette off with a xcr. Not that you wont have fun on that sled. Sorry, thats just my thoughts on the subject.

Well in the early 90's I had a Plus x and loved the power and ride for the time but sleds have progressed a lot since.

One of the guys who rides with us still rides an old Formula III around the same year, runs great but slow in the rough stuff!

i don't see anywhere where he said he was looking at or found a XCR, do you? he was asking about the formula plus.
go ahead with the 521 plus. that motor is bullet proof. those PRS skidoos were built to oval race. they are great stock oval race sleds. and that 521 rotax will long outlast any high strung 440 fugi.

A lot, but just ride it!! Should be quite a big jump from that olympic??? Keep it stock, more realiable. I had a set of twin pipes on one of my motors, and it was actually faster with the stock one!!
tambo
Thanks G-Ville, sounds right... And yeah it is a big jump from the Olympic lol...i'm pretty happy to own it..and a proud owner of a another ski-doo, I'll keep the engine stock forsure then. I'll do some little things to it nothing to big. Here's some pictures of it...it's not in bad shape!!

FIREBALL 440
wow, it looks pretty clean for an old sled.

I owned a 92 formula plus, it was a great sled in its day. Di n't the 91 come with the 583 without rave's?? never the less its a lot better ride than what you had before thumbsup.png

Yeah i thought so! it needs some paint and little stuff but all in all it's in really nice shape

there's a book at crappy tire called 1985-1989 Repair & Service Manual for the formulas would this book be good for mine..being a 91??

nope it was the 92 and 93 Plus that had the 582s(no Rave)

91 had the detuned 89-91 521

btw good looking sled
johnniev57
Yep, nice sled!
You might have probs with that terrible sway bar they had out for that one year.
My suggestion would to be to update to a 92 or newer setup. Wider and back to the old sway bar design.
Maine_MXZ
Ha, i thought I was the only one that had one of those. I bought mine about 10 years ago. Everyone has pretty much said the low down on it. Engine is great, never done anything to mine, and have almost 7K on it now. Still has the original track. I have redone the rear suspension twice, for some reason it likes to eat shocks. You would be better off upgrading the front end to a 92-93 style. 91 was the only year they used the set up they did and the sway bar on mine kept popping out. Heavy pig but will get up and go for sure. My is in bout the same shape as yours and cant bring myself to part with it for some reason. Enjoy it.

Thanks Maine_MXZ..Iv'e been looking for the parts to change the sawy bar set up but nothing yet. What would i change on the front end if i was to do what you said?? I need a new front idler wheel.. and was woundering hows the easyest way to get the old one off?? I also tryed to get the rubber boot for the skis..they dont make them anymore wink.gif
