From the Western Star:
Jon Patten claims King of the Bumps crown at Race on the Rock
Section: Sports
By Chris Noseworthy,
It may not be his birthday but Jon Patten is still the King of the Bumps.
Corner Brook's Patten and his 800 cc modified Ski-doo tore up the sno-cross circuit here at Marble Mountain Sunday to earn the distinction.
King of the Bumps is the title given to the racer who wins the Open category, a field with no restriction on the size of modification of the sled.
The weather was decidedly beautiful Sunday, but the warm temperature made the course soft and a little difficult to maneuver. according to the newly crowned king.
"It was a rough course in the end," Patten told The Western Star. " It took a lot of gumption to get going."
Patten said he rides frequently, but this event is special to him.
"I spend a lot of time on a snowmobile, that's all," he said. "It is really nice to be out there riding with all the guys, all your friends. That is what is nice about being here. It's nice to look over and see your buddies racing against you."
To the uninitiated it may seem like snowmobile racing is a simple as pinning the throttle open and trying to hang on. This, however, is far from the case. Patten, who has won division races in previous years, but his first King of the Bumps race this year, said that one of the keys to winning an event like this is endurance.
"You have to be in shape," he said. "It gets pretty tiring." Patten described a condition he called arm pump where the muscles in your forearm start to lock up from the constant pounding through the bumpy course.
"You can almost fall off," he warned.
