I hit a waterbar in VT on Friday. 15 miles later I looked down and it was GONE! The impact must have cracked or weakened it because it was still there when I checked it. Boy did I feel lost the rest of the day!!!

Sorry to hear that. I found a tether that has a snap about 4" from the gps. That way I can leave the tether on the sled all the time, and just snap on the loose end to the gps when I put in on the sled.

One of my worst nightmares was that someday I would look down and find the gps gone. Ouch.

Nightmare is right!! It was like my security blanket. It was a Garmin 60cs... An expensive security blanket at that.

Funny you mention that. First time I put my GPS on the sled I figured lets put a safety strap on it just in case. Sure enough, first ride it came loose on a landing but tether kept it boucing off the dash till I could stop

My RAM mount broke also. I was lucky to see it break and catch the GPS.

RAM replaced the mount free of charge.

Where did you find that tether? what brand is it? I'm thinking I need one!

My etrex legend came with a lanyard for hanging around your neck. With that one, I would just loop the lanyard around the steering post.

I had another lanyard that came with a thumb/usb drive I bought a couple years ago. It was the same as the one that came with the etrex, but it had a snap about 4" from the end. I put this on the gps and tried to bounce it enough to make the snap fail and it held up.

I think if you did a web search you could find a variety of lanyards with quick releases.

Here's a picture of my lanyard setup.

What part of your mount broke? Was it the craddle, the arm, or the ball and U-bolt?

Ball mount broke for me after 2000 miles.

Was that the plastic ball mount on the back of the cradle? I purchased a metal one that mounts to the sled and decided not use the plastic one that came with the mount. Still plastic on the cradle through

I had this happen to me first time out with my GPS last year up in Derby VT. Expensive lesson learned!

Thats for the heads up. I've been meaning to add some kind of safety tether. Did that now I just need to figure out a quick release.

I made up a simple cable setup, works well:

The cable and ferrules came from a local farm supply shop. Used a chisel and hammer to crimp the ferrules.

WOW! I have been using mine for years on three different sleds and have never had a problem but I am really worried after reading this thread. I will definitely have to figure a way to secure it from now on.

same here I have 5000 miles on my RAM mount with no issues but I'll figure out something to attach it.
