I am looking at the Magellan Crossover GPS. I like it because it has turn by turn directions for the car and all maps preloaded. But it also has a waterproof and durable outer shell, so that it can be used outdoors. It also comes with basic topo maps and fishing maps. Has anyone tried this unit for snowmobiling. There website states that it will work but wasn't sure if maps were available for download on this unit. It also has an optional motorcycle mount (handlebar) which I am assuming would work great on the snowmobile....not to mention my bike. Of course the big bonus is that it has a 3.5" screen and can be used in both my vehicle and outdoors, but if no snowmobile maps are available then that would be a huge negative. Any help would be great.

Alright I went out on a limb and bought the Magellan Crossover GPS. I just got it last night and it works awesome. However, I am having problems uploaded snowmobile maps onto it. It has TOPO maps installed and I have tried to download the maps from sledzepplin. However, I don't know how to upload maps for the Magellan units. Does anyone have a Magellin unit that can offer some sugestions. The auto software loaded is Roadmate, so I don't know if these maps will work or not. If not, does anyone have some maps for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the UP that I can upload for a Magellan unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just thought of something - are you using the Explorist or Meridian versions of the maps? My guess is you'd want to use the Explorist .imi files.

I tried to download both the meridian and the explorist....but I am still not sure that I am doing the process correctly.

That's the best I can do for you since I don't have my own Magellan to try it on.

I think I have finally figured it out. The problem I was having was that I was changing the name of the file and that did not allow me see the file once it was downloaded onto a SD card. I still changed the file name, but intstead of using MN MAP as the name, I used MNMAP.imi.......this worked. The map I used to download was for the Magellan Explorist. Once I transfered it to the SD card and placed it back into the GPS unit, and automatic not came up "new maps have been found on inserted SD-card. Do you want to see a list of them?" If you click yes.....the map you have on the card will be available now. this can also be done be going into the outdoor menu and selecting "REGION"......this will bring up the area maps that have been downloaded onto the GPS unit and the SD Card. Can't wait to go out and give it a try now.......do you think we'll get more ridable snow yet?????

so here's a question. I have a Magellan 210 Explorist with no card but USB cord and software. Is it worth trying this or will I lock up the internal memory ?
freshman
Not really sure, but I have heard that you should only save the maps to an SD card......otherwise you can lock up your GPS. But I am no expert.

Ya Ive heard that before about non card units. Bought the unit in a hurry for a job and it was on sale. May have to upgrade to one with a card then I can have multiple cards for work and play
