Full Version: Sealed crank bearings - re-lube?

Okay, it may have been just a bash, but I read in another thread that the sealed crank bearings on the Doo's need to be re-lubed every 2,000 miles. Is this true? My brother-in-laws 99 MXZ600 has about that many miles on it since I did a crank replacement. I do not see any of the grease leaking out of the seal, but thought I should ask. That is one item I would prefer not to do "just for the hell of it" during the pre-season checkup.

BTW, how many miles are you guys getting out of the Series 2 600's?

Thanks,

Doug

I would relube the bearings 2-3 years, the grease is good but gets hard. I'm thinking every 3000-4000 miles.
My 99 600 has 18000 kms(11500 miles) orignal crank. I've regreased a couple of times.

How do you re-grease the bearings, do you have to split the cases?
DirtyDawg
Thanks Mikey.

Maniac: Yep, split the cases, or get REAL brave and drill a small hole in the PTO seal body, inject grease, and seal back up. I've done it before on other types of bearings, but I don't know if I would attempt it on that one.

Anybody else?

Yah, I was just wondering if you could shoot it into the vents, but I guess it wouldn't make it into the bearing. Splitting the cases is a PITA, but if it prolongs the life of my crank I guess it's worth doing every couple years.
