Ok I took my sled in today to get the waterpump checked because i had blew the prestone right out of it and started to over heat so i get in in to the guy and he takes the pump apart and tells me i need a new counter balance shaft and a whole new pump assembley with he said will cost 800 just for the counterbalance shaft canadain dollars and he said there was bearings missing from the shaft and i needed a whole new pump assembley too he said he needs to strip the whole engine apart to get at the counter balance shaft so for parts alone it came too 2000 dollars and for labour around 1000 does this sound right? since it will need all new engine rings and gaskets?

Are you good with tools?
I bought a remanufactured counterbalance with bearings for $240 usd last year. Find a friend or buddy who is good at wrenching. It is not that hard to replace and there are not that many tools required. It sounds like you are getting raped to me. If I were close I would do the labor for beers!
FYI I put a remanufactured crank and bearings in for $825 my cost
$75 for seals and gaskets

Wel thanks for the information he said he got me a 500 dolar brand new counterbalance shaft today do that saved me some money, soo altogether he still wants 2000 down for parts before he orders them im in remote area kinda 4 hour drive to take the sled else where or I can take it too the arctic cat dealer witch will cost more likely

This is what you will do/find when you have turned the engine upside down.
Easy and takes half a day if you have turned some screws now and then.
Just make sure that you put the cb-shaft and crank at their marks when you assemble the engine.

that is a fairly common thing that happens,the water pump goes and weeps water into the counter balancer shaft taking out the bearings,when you do take it apart notice the timing marks on the crank/counter balance shaft,and its not a tough job just time consuming
I redid my balence shaft bearings last year.
I ordered the bearings from a local bearing shop for around 100 can.
you should get a new end pin(what the waterpump impeller mounts on (20 can) and the waterpump kit (30 -35 can).
A machine shop will charge around 75 Can to press the new bearinggs and end pin in.
Alot cheaper than what your fellow is quoting.
Or pay the bill.
Its your call.

Less than $300 from my cat dealer for a rebuilt Cb shaft from Arctic cat. Looked like new when I got it back.
For what he want I can rebuild the whole motor,CB shaft,crank, seals, pistons and replated cylinders.
That dealer is no friend of yours . I would run for the hills.
Part of the reason I ride cat is that i can get good service and cheap parts. doo and yami raped me so I switched. Hate to say you need to find a better dealer mabe switch brands if you cant do your own work.
dont get me wrong I love cat but whatever sled you ride it will break and need service someday and your local dealer is going to be a big factor.
Sounds like your cat dealer is trying to drive you out of his place or retire on your $$$$.

Well he said he was gonna strip the whole engine and put new seals and gaskets and piston rings in because he had to to get at the counter balance shaft thats why its costing so much i guess thats what he said and yeah im good with wrenching but just never striped an engine and built one myself

Do yourself a big favour and buy the shop manual for your sled. 2 strokes are realy simple engines and with even limited mechanical skills you can just follow the step by step instructions and do it yourself. In the end it will be cheaper, you'll have a lot more tools, more knowledge, more satisfaction and a better running sled. If you get into trouble there's lots of good advice on forums like this one.

You don't need to take the top end apart at all. Infact, you are actually costing yourseld more time and money if you do. To take the engine out, flip it upside down, split the cases, change the balance shaft and put it all back together you would be looking at 10 hours shop time max. At 70 bucks an hour I would expect them to do it a lot quicker than that even. Total job should come in under a grand. DO NOT buy a cheap balance shaft. There are rebuilds kicking around without good bearings on the them. Some last, some don't. If you are paying to have it taken apart and put back together spend the extra money and know it will be fine. I do my own work and still spent the money on a new crank and balance shaft simply because it is a PITA to do it, let alone twice.
Simply put, you don't need to take the top end apart. The only thing that will help is to clean the top half of the case before you put it together. If it is showing signs of leaks then you might want to change the gaskets I suppose. You still can't take the crank out to clean the cases unless you take the pistons off. If you go that far you don't want to put the pistons back on with the same circlips, not good practice.... so then you need new circlips. Then there is the argument that if you are taking the cyls and pistons off you might as well change the pistons too.... etc etc etc.
IMO, either change the balance shaft with a new one and leave the rest together if it is in good shape or plan to rebuild it completely. Depending on mileage I would be more worried with crank/rod bearings than I would the pistons, if that means anything to you. Pistons are easily inspected. Hard to tell when a bearing is going to fail. Read: You won't be happy if you do everything but the crank and it fails in the next 1000 miles.....
