Hi all,
I just bought a 2001 MXZ 800 last weekend and a newer trailer yesterday. I have been out of sledding for the past 10 years, but have been sledding since I was 5 years old. I couldn't believe all the technological advances in motors and suspension since I got out of the sport. So, it was time to jump back into the deep end of the pool - bought an 01 MXZ 800. I fell in love with the looks and performance of this sled. Is there anything I should be watching for or concerned about with this model year sled? I had head that the 03 800's had piston flaking problems, but the 01's were decent. Thanks for taking the time with any replies!

in 01 they recalled all the 800's for the ring problems... so if your sled has that done its a solid sled. they also have great low/mid range power but lack on the top end

Thanks for the info - spoke with the dealer who originally sold the sled and found out that it did get the pistons and rings replaced under warranty when almost new. Also, does anyone know if there's a fuel petcock or shutoff valve on the fuel line to shut off gas flow when trailering? I know most older sleds had them, but I cannot seem to locate any on this machine. I can't wait to enjoy this great new snow we got here!!! rockernana.gif

There's is no fuel line shutoff on that sled , i do believe it's taken care of by the fuel pump . Have fun with your new sled .

Had my 01 mxz 800 for a few years now great sled, the only thing I would do is add reverse.
sledder800
Is it difficult to add reverse? I am fairly mechanically inclined, but have never attempted anything like this before? Ballpark $$$ amount?

From what I hear it will cost around $400 if you do the labor.

Adding reverse may cost more. My sled ('02 Renegade 700) has push button reverse. If this is the way you have to go (if there is no mechanical counterpart) you will need a new magneto, dual trigger coils, and a different MPEM box, as well as the push button itself, an RER compatible secondary clutch, maybe chaincase mods... Though this may be totally off base, so don't take it as gospel.
