...was what I expected at the end of an old feeder trail that went seemingly to nowhere, so we turned around and continued to have an absolutey fantastic day of riding!

On the trail by 8am, off by 3 as the snow was getting soft.

It may be the trails of the Snow Devils, but there were no hellish trails here, all heaven! All freshly-groomed! Second time here in less than a week and it is awesome! Hats off to the club and it's groomers! smile.png

Several of us are local to the area. Speak up if you head that way, and we'll get you directions on where to part, get gas, eat, etc...

LOL! Yes, just a silly eye-catcher. But while riding, we must have missed a turn as we found ourselves on a narrow, ungroomed trail that showed no signs of civilization or improvement. We were on it for a few miles. Not wanting to risk getting stuck with our gross tonnage (or find human skeletal remains on a '74 Boa-Ski), we turned around, and headed back to the pancake trails.
That was the only "bump" in our trip we found the whole day! thumbsup.png

America the beautiful, nice pictures.

BT,
Thanks! We did a day trip and parked behind the Castelton Pizzaria. Some more snow from tonight's storm will hopefully prolong the season and delay the inevitable meltdown.

Hemi thanks for the kind words over the past 3 years we have replaced 35 bridges to widen almost 90% of our trails to 12' beer_cheers.gif

Hey Freeze, you guys deserve the accolades. Replaced 35 bridges, and widened to 12 feet?! Wow! The hard work shows. An impressive system. thumbsup.png thumbsup.png thumbsup.png

We wanted to check out the northern trail section above 4a. We crossed 4a, went down a side street to a bridge. It led to a cemetary and the trail but was obstructed by a car, which was stuck in snow on the bridge. Additionaly, despite a posted "No Dogs Allowed" sign, the car owner was walking not one, not two, but three rambunctious doggies with her friend. Turn around time. I guess riding that section was not in the cards. Another day perhaps.

By north of 4a, do you mean on the north side of Rt 4 (the road, not the trail)? If so, trail 30 from Castleton towards West Rutland is usually rough, but well worth it when you get up on top of Grampa's Knob. The view is amazing, I think I have a pic - if I find it, I'll attach it - and you can loop right back onto 4c leading you back into Ira/Castleton.

I'm trying to figure out where you were when you hit the cemetary though....I'm stumped.

When you loop back on 4c, you'll come right down to the ledges of Birdseye Mtn. Its a view that most people never see. I'll attach the side view too...thats the one that most people that have driven through the area will recognize.

Nice views - wow never seen a snowmobile/groomer before - Ride and keep the trails smooth at the same time, what a concept

hey, i've been there before! took a pic of my sled right where that guy in the red coat is stnading, with that long flattish view behind it. buddy's mom lives over there so i took a couple trips over to ride. the trails weren't bad in the parks, but some of those RR beds were awful.... whoops 2-3' deep, no kidding.

Nice shots Weatherman!

Weatherman, They were going across 4A in Castleton village. Just west of the village by the historical building that is on the left. The trail goes out through the cemetery and comes out by exit 4 of the highway. Then it goes out by the elementary school.

Yup. That view looks west from the taconics. So you are looking into the southern Champlain valley in NY State right there. Then, if you turn left 90 degrees, you see the more jagged view. Thats looking south at the taconics, and the other view is looking east at Killington peak.

The rail used to be terrible. But Poultney now has 2 groomers. One does the trails, and the other spends most of its time on the rail...even in the past 2 years, the trails there have improved a ton.

I dont' live there anymore, but I keep my sled there since I don't have access from my house now. So I just ride out of our farm, or trailer from there.

ooooohhhhhh....thats right. I haven't been that way in a few years because the trail is usually really rough (although, when its smooth, its an awesome trail) once you get past the highway. I usually stay to the south of the highway, through Ira, and cross under it in West Rutland. (On Grabowski's farm)

Hey everyone, new to the site. This place is awesome!!! Rte 4 trail from the twin bridges in West Rutland to Poultney's Birdseye Road was groomed on Thursday night 3/2 Before the latest dose of snow on Friday. Be careful this weekend on the trails, was out today a bit and there is a ton of limbs and branches down. Oh yeah the trail was flat as a pancake when I got done with it!! Enjoy the ride.

welcome bbailey!
