Hey guys, Planning on visiting Maine next week (March 4 - march 9). Have never riden in Maine before and not so sure about where we want to go. Were from southern New Brunswick but are willing to travel to northern New Brunswick and cross by snowmobile. Where would you guys recomend we cross and have a good weeks run? how feesable would it be to run into New Hampshire or Vermont in the week we have? how about buying trail permits and the trail network itself? are the trails marked well to find our way around? thanks in advance for the information! Jon.

Trails are well marked. In fact, based on my one trip to NB, you should be pleasantly suprised. Crossings, Houlton, ME, Limestone, ME, Van Buren, ME, Ft. Kent, ME. I always liked riding from Houlton to Ft. Kent in a day ~170 miles. Staying in Ft. Kent you can ride 150 to 200 mile loops around The County for a couple days. or you can cross into NB and ride back into ME at a number of crossings since you'll have NB stickers as well.

Maps are available at sled shops and hotels. ITS map and trail condition reports are at the following link.

Permits are available at most town offices and some shops. They are listed here. http://www.maine.gov/ifw/rv/nonres_snowagents.htm

Never been riding in NH or VT.

Hope you have a great trip.

SmithWesson, of the border crossings listed above are I like the ones at St Leonard/van buren and centreville/bridewater and littleton/woodstock the best as they are all small crossings with little road running to access. Actually, the only one that is a real pain is the madawaska/edmunston one- did that a couple of times, not even sure if you can still get access through the streets?

As off shore says, the county is great riding, if you want to spend some days there, but if you want to run west, a trip from houlton-millinocket, kodadjo, rockwood, jackman, eustis, rangely and into pittsburg NH and onto vt is dooable and you will find good conditions currently for this run.

The riding will be comparable with what you would find between cambellton/bathurst/riley brook/perth/centrville- many good woods roads riding as you head southwest, along with some rail beds and fields mixed with the woods in the county and a few more small communities to visit than NB.

Have a great ride, We always enjoy riding in NB as well.

Roadrunner gave great advice; drop into northern Maine and make your way southeast to Rangeley, Maine, near the NH border. Once in Rangeley you can decide to head into NH, then I would recommend jumping into Quebec for the return trip. If you do not want to buy a NH permit, backtrack to Eustis or Jackman Maine and jump into Quebec from there. This is a nice trip.
