i just rebuilt my sled... all stock except silencer and decompression holes blocked off. new clutch, cylinders and crank. power valves seem to move freely when u take them out and they are clean. sled does tach out but seems very down on power. and i did bead blast power valves(whoops) so i think the teflon coating is gone.. probably the problem. im open for suggestions.

i wasnt aware the 700 had decompression holes ??

I doubt the non-coated power valves are the problem. I haven't bead blasted them but after cleaning them every 400-500 miles over 3 years there is not much coating left on mine either. The 700's seem especially bad on caking up sludge. I have tried differnet oils, blue marble now, better but not great. Mine still makes good power with clean valves.

I also wasn't aware the '03 700's had decomp. holes. Where?
1QuickProX
yes the 700 has decomp. holes as i just rebuilt mine. I was going to post something similar to this as well. I'm have the same issue as you are. I replaced both pistons and a cylinder probably from running too lean. I was running 440 mains needles in the second position from the top and tempaflo turned 1/4 lean. The sled tachs out but is very sluggish but it still sees 100 mph on the speedo. I am now running 440 mains needles in the 3rd position and no more heads or tempaflo. This weekend while riding every sled would crawl all over my 700 where i was killing them before. I checked the plugs and they were soaking wet riding in 0 - 10 * weather. I'm pulling it apart tomorrow to see whats causing it. I think it might be chipped reeds allowing too much fuel into the cylinders. At idle it is around 1000 rpm and sometimes lower not even registering on the tach. All i want is a to get it back to normal. I am seriously thinkin about jumping ship and spring ordering something different for next year. Soory to hyjack your thread just venting and telling you your not the only one with this problem.

Well I have an 04 700 XC and have played with it quite a bit.

Check Compression? -Just to make sure everything went right on the rebuilds?
Reeds- might be weak dumping too much fuel.
Jetting- 440's are rich in my 04....works like a dog until atleast 420-430 at sea level.
Stator- will go bad and still run fine...but can pull your hp down once they get weak.
Power Valves-Glass beading shouldnt bother them as long as your bellows are fine.
Air fuel circuits set ok?
Shitty Fuel?
Secondary binding??

Just a few thoughts

Good Ideas. I have basically the same mods as 1QuickProx, stock head and went by the sweet spot with 430's using Tempa, went to 440's and Tempa all is good. If I didn't have Tempa I would try 430's after I checked the things you mentioned.

I've never run the tempa set up, but I am ported/head/pipe and nitrous.
And when I just had an slp single, the thing was an absolute POOCH with 440 mains.
Even with my mods I run 420's , stock clips, at sea level
Dockorzun
Agreed, with stock set-up I could run 420's above 0F.

With 430's, tempa and mods the other day the plugs were white at -10 and 1500 ft.

its funny how the same sled can be so different
slp single, gutted slp air box mod,430s tempa flow, -25c my plugs are black, but runs good.
i run cheap dino oil, i guy i ride with says that why there black.
before synthethic, how did they read plugs LOL
and i ride at 7-1000 ft

Yeah that is so true how no 2 sleds are the same....

Kinda off subject, but you guys find an oil that works good with the 700 VES valves.

2nd season on Ipone...no complaints.
Alot depends on how you ride as well.

Are you sure you did not block off the ves passage? I do not think the 700 has decompression holes.

My 04 700 VES does have the decompression holes Pockets....

my 03 sure don't feel like it has decompression holes when you pull it over?? But SLP is saying their in there

Fella's

I am working on my 3rd season with a SLP single on 2 different 700 VES twins.

I have also seen the 700 won't run for shit until it is jetted sharp which means 430 at least, 420 when it's much above 10degF.
You will know when it turns on as it will pull full rpm, around 8050/8100, hard and easily with 66gr weight.
It'll also pull like a freight train!! Much harder than stock. Jetted rich it will surely be poochier than the stock pipe.
This is particularily so running the gutted box and or reeds as they both cause the sled to act richer on the same given jetting, by at least one size.

Definitley stay in the 3rd needle position.
You need the fuel for part throttle midrange operation or it will burn down.
The allure of the 2nd needle position is great for drag racing or snowcross like riding but it won't survive trail riding.

PS Be very careful about jetting specs and TEMP.......Lot's of Canadians and Americans on this site and I see lot's of posts with jetting specs/temps that don't spec Cel.or Far. The jet spec for Celcius will be lots leaner in Farenheit!!!!!
If it doesn't spec the Cel/Far factor have a boo at the posters locale at least.

I thought only the 04+ 700s had the decomp holes? I know the 800s got them in 03.
03prox700
i wasnt sure if the holes are decompression or the actual passage that makes them move. but last night i took out the set screws that i had the holes blocked with and it runs liked a raped ape!! i got the idea from a guy with an 05 xc 800... apparently its different, his runs good...so dont plug the holes I guess.
