Not being funny, but I would check the bulb first. Sometimes a burnt filliment will short out on the other filiment inside the bulb.

Brake light switch, located up on the master cyl.

the plug under the seat may have come disconnected, if you don't hear a firm click plugging it together, it can shake loose.

My brother in laws 08 switch fst did the exact same thing yesterday.

Got one in the shop right now with this problem. What I found is the tail lite harness pinched and wore through between the tank and ecu. Repaired wires and all is well.

It was the taillight bulb itself . Cheap ass chinese bulb too. One filament inside bulb was shorting against the other one.

I had the same this happen this past weekend. Pulled up to a place to go in and all at once the head light & tail light went out and the brake light came on. I pulled out the fuse which was blown and replaced it with a new fuse checked all the lights and break lights and yesterday rode all day and no problems at all. I did have the seat off to do the gas gauge repair but I checked it out last night and I dont see any pinched or bare wires. Any other ideas??

Check the 30 amp green chassis fuse in the fuse box above the belt. Mine blwe this week and caused no headlights and the brake light on the dash came on. Still have not figured out why the fuse has blown.
