Well, I finally got to do some serious riding on my new Switchback CFI! There's still hardly any snow here in west central MN where I live. So, me and couple of buddies loaded up the sleds on Friday and hit the road! Destination, Ironwood, MI in the western UP. I did get to put some miles on at home before the trip to break in the sled. Mostly riding on the lake close to my house. (the snow that we do have drifts pretty good along the shore) We got to Ironwood about 2pm, and boy did they have snow! I think they got 3-5 in. the day before we got there, and they already had lots of it!
After getting settled in at Black River Lodge, (great place to stay!) we rode the sleds for just a couple of hours around the area before it got dark. Saturday brought more of the white stuff, about 6 in. It started to snow about 8am and didn't quit hardly all day! We rode all day in the fresh powder, all on forest roads and logging trails! Absolutly loved it! These trails hadn't been touched all winter long, maybe just by a few locals! 80% was all untouched snow! We bought our MI trail permits, thinking we might ride some trails, but we didnt even touch a groomed trail all day. We had talked to some friends that were in MI the same weekend, riding trails, and they said the trails were rougher than hell, and in some spots down to the dirt! (shity!) They even got stopped 3 times by the DNR and checked for permits. We met only one snowmobile all day long, a local guy out cutting wood with his wife. We were a bit lost at the time and he was kind enough to tell us directions to get back to our truck! Then on Sunday morning we woke up to 6 more inches of snow covering the sleds! Rode all day again in the same area, but then we did decide to try the trails before we left. They weren't too bad just north of town but, the futher north we went the worse they got, they didn't lie when they said they were rougher than hell and down to the dirt! Those trails had the piss pounded out of them! Went only about 20 mi. before we turned around and went back to the powder. I guess i learned i dont care much for riding trails! The best part though, my sled preformed flawlessly! Great in the deep snow. And fast! Got stuck only once all weekend, carving through some deep snow and layed it over on the side, i stood up and the snow was up to my stomach! My other two buddies were gettin stuck all the time! (06 Fusion and an XCR 800). I can even wax my buddies XCR 800 up to about 80-85 mph! All in all a great trip and a great sled!
