This is the first year with my sled. It is a 2002 500 XCSP Edge X. There are two anyoing noises that are buging me. The first one is the chain case. Man that is bad, but I have read all of the post on HCS and I guess that I will just live with it. The other noise is comming from the left front of the sled. It is a wump thump type noise that varies with speed. It goes away at about 20 or 30 mph. I have had a few friends ride the sled and they can here it too. It sounds like a bearing or something is screwed up with the driven pully. The sled runs great especailly at high speeds. The other wierd thing is that when I am starting from a stop the sled jerks a few times like the clucth is hitting and missing. As soon as I get going the jerking stops. Any ideas?

Nice sled ! first things first, the chain is common sounds but you should check, and adjust the chain tensioner and see if that helps, the chain will stretch due t rippin and riding your sled. the slip and grip your getting from the drive pulley could be as easy as a replacing a bad belt. take off the old one and check to see if its wearing uneven, if so replace and take for test ride. some other guys will chime in and help you out futher.

Definitely check your belt. The 'whump whump' you describe usually is caused by a chunk of belt missing, or maybe a the reinforcement cord woven in the side of the belt is ripped and hanging out, causing the clutches to grab on it as it goes by. If that's not it, raise the ass end and turn the secondary over by hand feeling for bind thru the chaincase to the track.

Definitely could be the belt causing this noise. Another thing to check the belt for is a spot were it could have got burnt by the clutch while revving the engine and the track not moving. If you have an extra belt and unsure if it is the belt throw it on and see if the noise goes away.

Thanks all. I have an extra belt and it is brand new. I will put in on and take it for spin. I will also look at the old belt to see if it is narrowed or damaged. I'll let you know what I find.

BTW the chain tension is good. Hand tight then 1/4 turn out. Man that thing is LOUD.

All I can say is thanks everyone. thumbsup.png I changed the belt last week and finaly had a chance to ride a couple of miles tonight. What a huge differance. The sled works great. No jerky starts. No whump whump. So now the questions is should I save the "bad" belt for a spare or get a new one? The "bad" belt looks just fine. No exposed cords and no chunks missing.

Please just throw out the junk belt and get a new one.You never know when it could come back to haunt you or do some real damage to your sled.Ever seen what a belt can do to a sled.I have...a buddy's...just buy a new one.

well.. a worn belt may get you out of the woods.. but thats a maybe. Getting stuck in the woods would suck eh?

New belt on will be on order soon. I will add the old one to some bent skis, a burned down piston, a broken crank pin and some other parts from war storries over the last ten years.

For the new on should I stick with Polaris? That is what I have on it now.
