On my 05 fusion 900 the primary clutch will close when I rev up the rpms but will not open back up when I let off the throttle. The spring is not broke. What will cause this?

a couple different things, when you re doing this is the belt on or off??

the weights could be hiting and causing binding, the bushing on the center shaft could be filled with foreign material.

what happens when the engine is down to idle?? does it open when shut off or does it stay closed?

Does it with belt on and off. The weights are not stuck. If the belt is on the sled shuts off at idle. I can pull on the clutch and it opens back up. I had the heater on for two hours now it seams to be working again. Must be ice.

That is what is going on with my 700,so I took it to dealer and called them today with progress report, They said all the buttons were gone and the bushing was shot.I was hoping to have it back to go north this weekend but not a chance, had to order parts,so I guess I'll go to work Sat. and Sun. and wait til next weekend.

I had that happen to my primary the winter I first got it. Torque stop fell out, unknowingly, and believe that the primary got so hot it actually warped the clutch where it sits on the end of the crank causing it to stick shut. I, obviously back then, didn't have the SLP torque stop and push arm which I am sure you do now.

It is most likely that you have a sticky movable sheave bushing. Causes include dirt (belt dust and such), cleaners causing bushing to swell, overtorqued bolt causing inner shaft to swell on taper, or....the 2 clutch faces coming together from running it without a belt ( this causes the steel ring used to keep the bushing in to squash the bushing making it smaller ID).
It works now after applying heat because the aluminum has expanded...most likely will bind again when cold. The fix is to have the movable sheave bushing replaced properly. I saw one last winter where the guy just kept driving it until the belt wore through the sheave to the re-enforcing ribs!!

I light honing with a brake hone might get you through for a bit, a very light hone!! don't go ape-shit!!

or, if you still have warranty, use it!!!
