Anyone know where to pick up maps for trails around Whiteface, Aurora/Hoyt Lakes, Giant's Ridge areas? Used to check out the map at the Mooseline, but not this year..

Thanks! :div20:

Not real easy to get lost over that way anyway since there is one trail that runs from Giants ridge to hoyt lakes and down to whiteface, follow the signs and ride

what about aurora/hoyt lakes to eveleth/virginia? I was told by some people that there was a trail all the way through, and by others that there was no trail. Whats the scoop?

Little help on the "roller coaster"? Where is it, what is it, and how do we stay out of trouble on it?

We might ride west this year to Trailhawks territory, assuming there's enough damn snow.. Might have to hang out on the lake if conditions don't improve.. We'll probably find some way to keep ourselves busy..

Let's go Accuweather, Weather.com, Johndee, etc.. Let it snow!!

As you are leaving Hoyt lakes headed west. I hit them leaving HL one nite (first time there). I was leading and just started to climb in speed when I saw the caution sign. I slowed a little and then it felt like the bottom fell out from under me!!! Damn it scared the hell out of me, but was really cool at the same time.
IronRangeRider
let me know when you are comming and maybe I can ride with ya.

We'll be up Thursday night, the 25th, around midnight. Cabin should be nice and toasty! We'll have 3 guys up there Friday itchin' to ride somewhere. Me and another guy have new-to-us sleds this year (my buddy has done a bunch of crap to his) so we want to get them out.. Might do some ice fishing too, we'll see what the weather does. Two more guys coming up late Friday to ride on Saturday. I know there is a ride heading out of Isabella that weekend that we talked about trailering to but I think we'll just ride out from the cabin..

You don't happen to know Tom Stewart, do you? Taking a shot. He's a relative of mine who lives in HL.

If you or anyone are up for a ride that weekend we'll be around. May not be as "hard core" as we should be for this forum, but we'll give it our best shot!

We have relatives on Whiteface and the family rule is to welcome the boats coming in with a brew.. Same would apply to sleds pulling up! :beerchug:

If anyone wants to hook up we can probably find a new meeting place if the lake is too far away from the action.. Damn you Mooseline! :banghead:

My buddy has a plack in Skibo, visited the Mooseline a bunch of times.

I have been on a few "rollercoaster" trails that were fun to launch off the tops of the hills, the Hoyt Lakes coaster would kill you I think.

There is a trail from Biwabik to Gilbert right now it crosses highway 135 just outside of Biwabik and follows highway 4 south across the bridge and then turns right and heads towards Gilbert and the OHV park, from Gilbert right now you have to run along side the bike trail to get to Eveleth and the trail to Virginia, and to get to our trail that runs south to Cotton you would right now have to ride the ditch of 53 south to 37 where the trail starts now.. We will have the link complete next year from highway 37 to Eveleth and maybe the trail from Eveleth to Gilbert will be in place as well then also...

Trailhawk, we're talking about heading your way but it's more likely we'll head up to Aurora/Hoyt Lakes and Giants Ridge. I guess it will depend where the good snow is. I'd rather cruise some groomed trails than bang around in ditches for the day. Of course we'll have Friday and Saturday so maybe we head west one day and north the other..

I'm just hoping some more snow hits so we'll have some more options!

Are the trails busier in one area than another in and around this area? I suppose Giants Ridge gets more pressure?

Some local insight is always appreciated!

I know for sure that the trail from Hoyt Lakes to Pequyann don't get used that much.
ZimRandy
Just a heads up on some sled traffic up there. I am part of a ride scheduled to leave Two Harbors, to Pequaym, to the old Mooseline, Hoyt Lakes, Babbit, then Ely all on Thursday the 25th. There should be 100+ sleds, riding in groups of 15 to 20 sleds. hyper.gif

Friday all 100+ sleds will be hanging out around Ely.

Saturday we leave Ely to Isabella, Finland, then to Two Harbors.

We'd love to see you on the trails, but I understand if you head the other way! grin.png

Who do you know in Skibo? Not Dave or Joe Fonte is it? I have rode up there in years, with that group.
Jeff_G
I don't know them but my buddies family has owned the old Rail Road bunk house in Skibo for a long time. They have three or four families that own it together. I know one family rides up there in the winter alot. My buddies last name is Rohweder.

ZimRandy, you guys should have cleared out by the time we hit Whiteface on Friday. Just leave a little snow on the trails for us!

Rode from Aurora to Ely yesterday. Wasn't great, but it was pretty good. I'd give the trails a 7 if anyone is wondering.

How is it between Aurora and Hoyt Lakes? We rode through there on our way from Whiteface to Giants Ridge last year and it was pretty rough trying to get through the cities. Any better this year?
trailhawk100
Neither does the trail from 37 to Cotton it doesn't get used much either, without the link up 53 from 37 to Eveleth most people don't know it is even there. Our trail is groomed and ridable south to Cotton, but the swamps are a little bumpy, maybe about 3 miles of bumpy stuff the rest of the 25+ miles is smooth and has a good 3-5 inch base on it all groomed. We were on it Sunday and put on 90-100 miles in a few hours..The trails from Giants Ridge North are always busy on the weekends it seems, that is why I like going South or better yet go East of Whiteface and ride the logging roads towards Isabela if you know where they are at.

I rode from Hoyt Lakes to the West end of Vermilion last weekend. The best snow was allong the ridge from HL to Giants Ridge, It also got a better as you get towards Tower. Vermilion was pretty good on the east end (the west end was frozen slush and rough). I startes towards Ely on the Taconite but felt it was a little on the thin side and rough. the Iron ore Trail was fair with some railroad ballast coming thru in spots. The orphan was in good shape up high but thin in the embarrass swamps. Hope this helps.

Any hope for snow by next weekend? My uncle on Whiteface said they only have a couple inches on the ground right now. We've got a half dozen guys heading up there next weekend.. Looks like we might be digging deep for some ridable trails if the lake doesn't have anything to offer. From what you guys are saying we should be able to at least find some decent trail options..

I'm hoping for some snow out of this next system that is supposed to hit Sunday into Monday. Sounds like there's a chance for some measurable totals.. Let's make it happen! thumbsup.png

From what I heard today the trails around Hoyt Lakes area have yet to be groomed and also from Biwabik to Gilbert has yet to be done, so I am thinking the trail from Hoyt Lakes to Mooseline area isn't groomed either. The ditch along 16 over to Timbers Edge looked ridable yesterday when I went by there if you wanted to get to a groomed trail and head south to Cotton and to Melrude and back up, pretty decent riding there
