Full Version: Switch to SB or 136" extension on my '02 700 XCSP?

XCSPectin' Snow
I'm posting here and the XC/XCR page to get both sides! From what I've read it sounds like the SB is a pretty sweet all-around ride.. Would putting a 136" on my XCSP get me a similar set-up, or are there other things the SB has that will still make it the better option?

I'm guessing with the expense of extension, new track, etc, I could sell mine as is and swap to a used 600 SB for a similar investment..

The question is, which way to go?

I think that it depends on what your primary riding is. This is not exactly a trick question, either. The biggest difference (other than the whole IQ chassis) is the rear suspension. The Switchbacks use the RMK uncoupled rear skid, which is not as trail or ditch friendly as what you currently have with your XCSP. If you are an aggressive rider, this may be bad.

If you are just going to upgrade to a pre-IQ chassis SB, just extend your rails.

I will say that if you upgrade to a newer IQ chassis, you will be amazed at how different it feels. I'm not saying it is better or worse, everyone has their own opinion, but it will feel much different than what you are used to.

In all honesty, if I were you I would really try to find one to take for a quick spin first.

If you don't want to try one, I would say upgrade to the newer sled (Switchback) for these reasons:
  1. Parts availability. Polaris obsoletes sleds at the 5 year mark. Things can get very hard to find.
  2. Suspension compliance. The biggest change (even with an uncoupled skid) that you will notice.
  3. Riding position. The IQ chassis just sits right. It is fully adjustable and it just plain works better than the older chassis.
  4. Engine. The 600 small block is a great motor. It will easily run with your older 700.
  5. Track. The switch 144 with the tipped up rails really does work as claimed. It turns good on the trail, yet has the extra flotation in the powder.
I hope this helps your decision making. If it were me, I'd sell the old and go with the new. Find an '06 600 SB and be happy.

If you decide on a SB, keep me in mind. Mine maybe up for sale after the weekend. Good or bad price, I am thinking below $6k. It will have a set of '07 skis & '06, and a Holtzman ATAAC. Somewhere around 1000 miles. I am considering going back to a 121. Have to see how testing with the '07 skis go.

I agree with the comments Eastreich makes, that is why I am considering going back to a coupled suspension. We ride 90% ditch and trails, very hard and very aggressive. I would say my ideal sled would be a IQ coupled 136. But then that's me.
