well thats a matter of opinion. what do you consider proper gearing for trail riding? the first gear on the 400ex and 450r are the same, in fact they are "nearly" the same up until 4th gear...then the 450 runs away. my LTR-450 on the other hand tops out at 65 mph where the yamaha and honda top out around 75-80. if you drop one tooth on the front sprocket i think you will find the gearing you are looking for......and the 450's will last a long time too, buddy of mine i ride with has put over 2000 tanks of gas through his honda 450 and it runs fine still.
anyway the bottom line is if you like performance to any degree you will regret getting a 400ex or a warrior or a 300ex.....they are all slow and beat you to death when jumping or just bangin down the trail. i had the same opinion as you on the trail sport quads untill i bought my 450.....now ill never turn back.
Well, when your the service manager for a Honda dealership you see what comes in and why. You also hear all the opinions of your customers. I'm not saying the 450's aren't a great machine. They just aren't made for puttin around.
The 450 was bred for racing plain and simple. No different then taking a 440 sno pro and trail riding it. Sure, you can do it but it's not what it's meant for
The 450ER has abit tamer motor with electric start and non titanium valves for longer life expectancy.
Come by my service department,I'll be happy to show you a BUNCH of pistons from 450's from people who decided that Honda's reccommended maint was too much too often and decided not to do it.
It's kinda like the OLD Fram filter commercial.....you can pay me now or you can pay me later.
