I am brand new to owning my own sled and am looking for tips or ideas that you all might have to share. I purchased a '94 vmax 500 and am looking forward to getting out this winter.

Pull the skid out of it, check all the bearings and cross shafts for wear. Most likley the bearing by the speedodrive is shot, Look closely at the primary clutch for cracks. Most likely the steering bushings are shot and the collers are rusted to the bolts making repairs in this area difficult at best. Leave the motor and pipe stock, it is a fast sled and will suprise some 600's. Expect about 10-11 mpg

I bought a '94 Vmax 500 for my wife brand new back in '94....great little sled. Sold it to my brother several years ago, and as far as I know, it still runs.

Good starter sled, but fairly heavy and a bit rough riding compared to the later model trailing arm 2-strokes, or the current 4 strokes.

Ride it this winter, and if you really like the sport, then sell it in the spring and buy something newer. It will give you a whole new appreciation of the improvements in ride and handling the newer sleds provide.

I was quoting daytripper because he actually broke it down very well for you and seems to know this particular sled like the back of his hand.
