Hey i have a 98 XC 700, 220 cylinders, just bought a hot seat 38x helix and im thinking of using epi red for the primary and 64 gram weights, wondering which secondary spring to use, either the epi orange or the polaris silver/blue?? What is the difference between the 2 secondary springs??

Thanks in advance!!
racerdave
use 62 gram weights and silver blue

I've used both in my 99 xc, for my use I liked the EPI orange slightly better.

Specs for the springs are 43/75 for the silver/blue, 49/83 for the EPI orange, but they measure a little different so the specs are not directly comparable.

Also the EPI orange also has less torsional resistance so it will upshift faster but slower backshift vs. the silver/blue, if all else remains the same.

HSP orange #3

hmm some say silver/blue some say orange haha. well ive already heard that the 38x is slow at backshifting so if the orange makes it slower then the silver/blue should i go with the silver/blue? Is one faster then the other? Ive also heard either the 62 gram weights but the 64 gram weights make it pull even harder? lets see if others chime in and here there opinions!

Thanks

I had 38x with EPI silver in my old '98 XC7 (220 version) but being the motor was very strong, I had to throw in 64g to keep the revs in the powerband. I think I was using EPI red for primary. Dont let the motor spin any higher than 7.8k WL.

PS - 38x would be a better suit for racing and if youre looking for all around trail riding, look into R12 (50/36) Im not sure what the Orange secondary spring is rated for but for the most part, Polaris blue/silver works good for many applications.

Don't you trust what I have told you!?? You want 64's for that 220 motor, EPI red, drop a tooth on your top gear (22T) 38X, silver/blue in hole #2!! If your motor is strong you will not have any problems pulling that helix, by the way - be ready to HANG ON!

unless he's allready at 23 teeth top, dropping the top 1 tooth would put him at 23. 24 was stock

I knew I had that wrong! I acutally ment a 2 tooth drop, I couldn't remember for sure what it was that I put in last year, 1 or 2 down.

deffiantly drop 2 teeth.

deffiantly drop 2 teeth.
jrdrag5475
So by dropping 2 teeth that would give me more top end correct?? then wouldnt i lack bottom end then alot or would the clutching help that?? Would i have to get a different chain then if i dropped two teeth?
White Lightning
I dont know why you guys are suggesting dropping two teeth (top gear) being the motor has too much of a torque as it is. Would you be spinning the track much more than if you had left the stock gearing 24/40 the way it is? Unless youre talking about the setup to race 500 feet then youre talking a different setup all the way around. WL.
jrdrag5475
Yeah i think im going to leave my gearing stock!

i got a 97 xc 700 same moter

iam runing a hpe orange/black 10.66 egaugment 4500

stock 36 polaris silver/blue 3#on the preload

gearing is 23/41 stock chain it tight but it will fit more teeth on top
the better chance to avoid breaking stuff

pulls real hard better have some good picks

this set up rocks very good in the trails and will beat and hang with 04/05 800's in 500ft on the grass

take it or leave it works for me .02

Primary weight will be determined by what your sled will pull some will pull 64's some won't so you'll need to test/tune there. You really can't go wrong too much with either of the springs you suggested,I've run both and its more of a personal preference to match your riding style. As posted to each his own there. The reason I suggested the HSP orange is Pockets kept telling me to try it and I had one so I put er in and wow does it ever pull good with decent backshift(38x).I now run the 36x for a little better backshift.

jrdrag5475
can you really tell the backshift problem alot with the 38x?? will any of the springs i mentions helped the backshift problem better then the other?

Thanks
HSR
No backshift 'problem' its just a little slower, some notice it some don't depends on riding style. What does it take like 5 minutes to change springs????A lot less time than it takes to get 20 opinions on the net thats for sure!!! Test/tune is your best bet now if ya got snow.
jrdrag5475
haha true but no snow here yet in the good old minnesota
