Bought a 75 panther 440 fan couple years ago. It has the arctic "hex" clutch. I've had the clutch serviced by a reputable person, he said it has some life in it, and he cleaned it up. Is it normal at a low idle for the clutch to make a lot of "chatter"? Once the rpms raise the chatter goes away. It's done this since I've had it before and after it was cleaned and serviced. Seems to perform fine.

I don't know a whole lot about them, but that sounds like what my clutch was doing on my sled before it went out both times and both times it ran fine it only did it every now and then when I started going from a stop sign or had to slow down and then speed up it went out when I went to speed up after slowing down both times.

Can the bushings be replaced on these old timers?

My El Tigre does the same thing, it is the bushings causing the problem.

You can replace them but if you do bring it to a machinist because they use a bridgeport to press them in perfectly true to the face, if you don't there will be premature wear.

The bushings can be bought from HPE pretty cheap.

Ok
took a closer look

1) Is it ok to have some side play in the 3 spider arms?

2) Is it ok to have some side play in the 3 rollers?

3) Are the bushings that you are talking about the two hex shaped bushings, 1 in the stationary sheave, 1 in the moveable sheave?

4) Could the chatter be the spider arms and rollers rattling and moving etc?

Side play in the arms more than 1/16" or so is a bad thing. I rebuilt my hex in my Jag after the spring was found to be wimped out and so was the bushing. The only time mine chatters now is when it is first started and just before it rolls to stop. That's normal. Any other time means it is saying "Fix me again Tony." Swapping out the bushing is not a job for a nimrod. We made our own tooling to keep from buggering up the new bushing and followed the manual to the "T". It's real hard anymore to get the heavy duty bushings they made for the race sleds back in the day. Those were tougher. The new ones I have heard some stories about, like you can buy a new one and it has the same slop as the old one. Where are you at? If you are near PA or NY maybe I can help.

In WI, can you email the instructions from the manual you are talking about? vogt2@charter.net
