I just took out my used 900 today for the first time, 1930 miles. MFD quit when I stopped after about 10 miles. when I am riding it cut in and out and the system voltage was 0-1 bars. I checked it after I got home and the sled was cooled off. With heated shield, hand/thumb warmers on high at idle I can get voltage down to 9.5 to 9.8. but I rev it up goes up to about 12.5(engine still somewhat cold) nowhere to ride it at home. I am assuming it is the stator but no one that has had one go bad says that the voltage meter was low. Everyone says they just noticed rpm's drop. The sled seemed to run ok but I did not think to watch rpm's since I was on trail and not to many long straight aways. Has anyone else had this problem? I guess I know why the person was selling it. Seems like sled would run real poor with voltage that low.

My brother's 05.5 900 Switchback did the same thing and the analog speedo would move when he reved the motor up with the tack setting on digital. He took it to the dealer and they said it was the electronic speed sensor which I did not agree. He brought it home and it did the same thing. He and I figured out that it was the voltage regulator. He took it back to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with it, but they ordered the regulator and installed it. Now it works great! When he had the problem, I compared it to my 900 Fuse and my digital guage was always 3 bars higher. I took a voltage reading through the electric shield wire and it was alot lower than mine. His headlight was dim too. The regulator is mounted infront of the gas tank on top of the chassis if I recall correctly.

Anyone know how to test the regulator and or stator without any special tools? I have a volt ohm meter and any other auto related tools since I am a mechanic.
