:no_bashing: Nutter I Was already on the bay where I live Friday, 5 inches. Blew all the cob webs out of all three sleds. Not to slam the guys from out of area but as you know Nutter Scugog freezes very fast and makes ice quick. If I did not know this lake (been riding it since 1975) I would also be in disbelief that it would have enough ice to play on. I would how ever not be riding all over it, so yes enless you are a local it is best to stay off for a while longer. :div20:

Apparently a couple of guys have already gone through the lake up around Haliburton some place...no fatalities, just stupidity so far.....
Best advice - stay off the lakes - it is not safe yet - and it also makes us all look dumb if some one goes through the ice!

Still remember back in 1989 running all of Scugog on Dec 19th on 18 inches of ice. I also remember the 3 or 4 guys that dropped through the big open spot several years ago between the island and Caesarea. I've been riding on Scugog since 1980 and that was the only year I never rode on it- should tell you something.

Lots of ice between Port and the island on Scugog ..... 6+ inches as as of yesterday afternoon, and Nova75ss confirmed 5+ before going out on Friday :div20:
Remember once the first skim of ice is on and the waves stop, Scugog becomes an ice making machine, but you must know the lake, theres more than a few bad spots that take a little longer to get up to safe conditions.
As I always say if you dont know dont go :brrrr:

:cn: Thanks Nutter, I agree with you about the ice conditions on Scugog. It is one of the first lakes in Ontario to get safe as it makes ice very fast, I don't know why but it just does. Only reason I can think of is that the average depth of the lake is between 6-8 feet deep, so it does not take long to cool it off so it can start making ice. Example, by the time Simcoe will freeze over Scugog will already have been frozen for weeks and will be around 10-12 inches thick already. :div20:

Dec 10 2006, 09:53 PM
correct me if I'm wrong but due to the lake being so shallow, there is little room for error when the air gets warmer... thus when the water shifts and forms ice, it can also shift the opposite way (when it gets warm out) and thaw....
does this not make for horrible ice conditions and a big reason why scugog is known as a sledder's death trap?

Yes you are correct, when it warms up Scugog will also thaw fast, but up until Sunday night it was making ice every night and holding what it had made during the day. It is to bad that the long range is showing warm temps till the 18th and then it is going to drop off very cold again. This has happened the last three winters from what I can remember, sucks. :banghead:

Coming off the island this morn, it looked like the ice was water covered.
There wasn't enough snow on the lake this week-end, so I didn't see anyone take a run.

That was nasty .................. I was really thinking more about the south of 7 newbie riders,
most of those Simcoe riders know about ice, they spend enough time on the big ice cube.
they just need to learn if they leave others alone they wont have to defend themselves all the time :lol2:

Yes there have been some unfortunate incidents and deaths over the past years...but I don't recall any in the past 5 or 6.
