Well currently I am in Western NY (outside of Rochester) and may have an opportunity to move to Northern WI probably around the Minocqua Area. If the job turns out then I would have a steady job in the area. Any negatives of the area. I know it’s a somewhat smaller town then I live in now. I was there once and it seemed nice. How is WI to live in? NY has High taxes and I heard WI has pretty hi property taxes. If any one can give me some insight that would be great. Thanks a lot.
Gettin2Old
the Job situation around here (Minocqua area) is slim pickens, Low income levels mostly.

the riding is well worth it, Just never expect to afford a new sled with these incomes unless you have other means,

state taxes are high, but the benefits of becoming a WI resident evens it out, We have the second lowest insurance rates in the nation, (New jersey is highest, Iowa is lowest)

I am born & raised here, have lived in other states, and kept coming home.

Do you like hunting & fishing>? that is all there is to really do around here, No malls, No nothing. excpet a couple casino's nearby.

there is no real industry around here except the tourist , building, or service industry.

Can you post or PM me with who you might be workin for?
I can give a local/truthful perspective

I hope you like tourists, Ha, Ha.

One thing about the tourists though, they go home at some point. I would much rather live where you guys doo (XCR1250 & G2O), than in the Chicagoland area, which I'm on the fringes now.

What can I say.... 3200 lakes in a 2 county area, trees and eagles everywhere. Most of the jobs are tourism based with a few exceptions like medical, state, and small business's. Taxes are not that bad because the "fees" like car registration, no tolls, etc offset the state taxes. Schools are ranked as some of the best in the country. Not to mention thousands of miles of trails!!!!!

Thanks for the info so far. If this job thing comes about I have some info to think about. Thanks.

Great state for the outdoorsman, but really is a tax hell. uzi.gif Doyle

Can always drive to wausau for a better job. I seriously thought about moving there. They had some good welding jobs at the time.

What type of job are you getting? It makes a big differance. No women unless you head towrds bigger populations. Everyone I know loves the area.

I didn't get the job yet. I am waiting to hear. The job is with the snowmobile industry. So it would be a fun job. The area may not matter to much since the job sounds pretty good and it would be a good deal of travel at times.

After reading all your replies for the "job" you might land. I agree it sounds like your going to be looking at the Yammie secret test facility. Dude tell ya what. IF you get the job..PACK UP AND RUN from New York. You will NOT regret it. As was stated we have the 2nd lowest cost in the USA for auto insurance, other insurances are no more costly in comparison.

The area while away from any "metropolis" is only a 2 hr drive to Wausau/Merrill if you need to "Hit a mall" otherwise theres a Wal-mart in Minoqua and about an hour away in Rhinelander are Fleet farms, Home Depot and the like. IF yammie is the job then Id also assume a decent salary. In my mind decent salary that will afford you a comfortable living in the area to be 45-50Kmin a year with bennies if your single guy, if married and single income then you might want a little more. If your making more great, if less then seeing your probably mechanically inclined a side job at any of the local sled/marine places is quite likely.

Gas is $2.34 gal today. Definately utilize Gettin2old and Lakeland sledder as a resource, they are there and they can tell you what houses are selling for, what the phone bill runs, cable, natural gas whatever.

Overall though unless you have extremely significant ties to the area your in now your missing an extreme good oppurtunity to relocate to one of the best places in the USA to live in.

heres a website to check too. http://www.lakelandtimes.com/ Its the local newspaper.

just my 2 cents worth..........mps :div20:

Thanks for the replys guys. you guys guessed correct on the job. I am waiting to hear but there is a good chance its not locked in yet. It depends on who they choose. I should hear in a few days they say. Thanks for the tips. I was there for a day and it seemed nice. I don't have to many ties to the area I am at now. It is just nice to hear some info from guys who actually live there. Thanks

Taxes are cheaper here than in NY. At least sales tax, we are 5.5% and NY is 8% or 8.8% or whatever. My G/F moved out here from just south of Buffalo a little over a year ago. She loves it here, though she thinks WI is flat...haha. I took here to IL once to show her what flat is..

I would imagine property taxes cant be that bad up ther if your not on a lake. At least compared to down here.

Nothing against minoqua, but you should look at living in the out skirts of town.Minoqua is high priced for everything and most of the people are ex big city snobs(except the gentlemen on here of course)and rich.I grew up in the harshaw, tomahawk area and have family and friends in minoqua and can tell you that it would be worth your time to look around a little if you get that far.Good luck!Ps,dont be afraid of the wagon burners, they mind their biz if you mind yours. :div20:

I'll just say this, if my wife and I could make the money we're making now in jobs we could even just TOLERATE going to (not even enjoy), we would move up to the Minocqua area in a heartbeat.

My father in law has a cabin in Lake TOmahawk (15 min south of Minocqua) and I literally LOVE going up there, even when the trails aren't open.

As soon as our daughter is out of college, our plans are to retire and buy a house on the chain of lakes up there and find some part-time employment, or buy a snowmobile or Harley dealership up in those parts and rent and sell selds and bikes.

I hate watching $250 of every paycheck of mine, and another hundred bucks or so of my wife's go towards our retirement fund every payday, but we know the prize we get for doing so is going to give us a chance of retiring in the Wisconsin Northwoods.

I grew up in Madison, WI, which is a big city in my mind, and I love that town, but nothing like I love Minocqua.

If you have the chance to make good money in Minocqua doing somthing with snowmobiles, you have found the job I would literally quit my firefighting career for.

I also agree that living right in Minocqua is probably not the best way to spend your money. Lac Du Flambeau, Lake Tomahawk, Woodruff, etc... all have some pretty affordable places for you to buy with pretty reasonable property taxes.

Minocqua housing(off-water) is not as expensive as everybody thinks. most of the surrounding communities seem to be similar. The closest place that had a noticeable difference in house prices in my opinion was Tomahawk. When I moved to the area 5 years ago I lived on Lake Nokomis in Tomahawk and the 30 mile one way commute got old after a long work day so that option was ruled out.

Hey REVfirefighter....why wait? I think Northern Lights Harley Davidson in Arbor Vitae is for sale now!

Northern Lights is for sale? For real? I personelly know the guy who runs the shop, gonna have to make a call and see if it's true or not. Assumption is if it is true that it's only for sale for so much money if it sells the guy is set for life. From what i know they do pretty decent bus there. I'll make some calls and see what i can find out.

**OH and I agree with REVFF his dream is mine as well, get th hell outta dodge and head for the northwoods.

Aint dat the truth.........LOL $$$$$$$

Like many things "for sale" up there the price is usually so unrealistic the normal "Joe Schmo" can't make it happen unless theres some kind of silent partner with deeeep pockets.

Yeah, I heard some Harley Dealer is for sale around Nothern Wisconsin. My wife knew the daughter of the Wausau Harley Dealership before he sold it. Rumor was that the guy he sold it to was looking to turn around and sell it for a quick buck after he got sales improved there.

Eagle River has a Ski-Doo dealership listed in some real estate buyer's guides I have looked through. My wife and I seriously discussed it for about an hour, then just knew the $800,000 asking price was WAY out of our budget, and Im sure Northern Lights Harley isnt even close to sellling for that price.

Someday.............someday.

Hey Rev, I hope you have a lot of cash. Houses (older) on the Chain start at about $500,000 right now, the 1 or 2 vacant lots that are left are going for about $600,000.

Off water you can get a new home for under $200,000.

Yup. Basically, my whole retirement savings would be put towards a lakefront home if all our planning goes well. There's a few other factors to consider as well. My father in law has a cottage on a smaller lake in Lake Tomahawk (which we will get 1/3 of the inheritance), I get a pension when I retire, my wife will have her 401k, Im starting to invest in some stocks with good long-term growth potential, and we will hopefully have a cabin up there already and a house in Green Bay that we can sell and put a sizeable downpayment on the house in Minacqua.

I wouldnt call this a perfect plan, but our retirement planner thinks we're on the right track. Im hopefully going to be putting away over $500/paycheck before Im 30, which will supposedly put my 401k at over a million in value upon retirement. Uncle Sam will take his taxes that he's owed off of that million, and housing prices will probably be double what they are now when I retire 25 years from this January, but I hope to get this all arranged as best I can.

There's so many factors that could make this a very easy gowl, or an impossible goal. the idea of sitting on my own dock at sunset with a cup of coffee in my hands and my wife in my other arm is somthing I daydream about all the time. If it doesnt happen, Im sure just having a nice home up in Minocqua will still be somthing we will make the most out of.

They have created such a bad name for themselves, I wonder if a new owner could ever recover?
Those types of places seem to get "the stink of failure" around them and nothing can change that.

real bad service department over there from what I have heard, no actual experience. (Cough, Cough)

Chucks Cycle on 47 is done and the building for sale or rent, and we got a new cycle place called "Hollywoods Place" on old 51 now.

I have had no issues from their service or sales department....

They have been for sale for a few years. Usually during the early fall and mid spring.

Thats funny. They are putting up a new building and pretty sure they are doing fine.I get a kick out of these guys that think it is so perfect up here and bla bla bla.It is nice but if you move and work here make sure your job is better than secure, because it is very hard to find a diff job.Not alot of fires here either.Remember the grass is not greaner on the other side.Madison is way to libral,I hope it never gets that bad up here. But if they keep moving up here it will. :div20:
