Any tips on mounting a legend to a Polaris Edge? I was thinking about buying a ram mount handlebar clamp and just trimming the handlebar pad so it fits. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks
legend700
not a fan of the handlebar, just figure I'd hit it too much, mine is on a ram mount attached to the dash

polar800x
that looks good. where did you get that mount?
carguy
I used a RAM mount on mine a well. I mounted it on the right side of the dash on the horizontal part with an aluminum plate below to reinforce the plastic. The Ram mount works great. 2 seasons so far and it hasn't even come loose once.
Ordered my mount though GPS Central.

i have the garmin mount (the one with the double adhesive) mounded above the speedo and tach, right in the middle....its worked great so far....i don't have a see through windshield of a windshield bag, though....

I have the bar mount. Used it last season with no problems. Bought a spare bar cover off ebay to cut up.

Here are some pics I just took of my set-up.
I did the same for my brother's Viper and will probably do another one on his new REV.
Set up works great

You can see in the pics that I installed a lighter plug, but it worked like shit. Any bumps I went over would shake the power cord loose and I would lose power.
I wired in an RCA cable to the cig lighter adapter and plug it into a heated shield plug on the dash. This never comes loose and I can still use the cig lighter adapter in the truck.

How do you do that? The most I have gotten out of a set while sledding is 4-5 hrs and that was tucked in my jacket nice and warm. Out on the mount, they last an hour or two at most. I keep my unit tracking the entire time so that I have a map of all the trails I travelled, and that chews up power. That's why I went with the power adapter.
scolba
er... dunno.gif i don't do anything special...just put em in and ride. are you using the industrials from energizer? I have found that they last much longer than other batts.....especially in our digi cam. and in my rc transmitters too, for sure....
carguy
Do you get the industrials anywhere special, and how much more expensive are they than the regular batteries?
scolba
believe it or not, they are actually CHEAPER than batteries at other retail stores!! I get mine at Interstate Battery. They are like $11 for a 24 pack.

you don't think the extended life comes from my mounting place, do you? out of the wind and all?

(disregard the filth...it made an uncovered trip this weekend to ride in the freak IL snow... :div20:)

heres a small pack of the industrial and what the batt looks like so you konw what to look for. the 24 pack comes with 6 of the smaller 4 packs in it....

Car guy where did you get that plug adapter coming out of dash any info will help Thanks
legend700
for those running batteries lithium energizers can last a couple of days and are not effected by cold. thats running the backlight. for a 12v outlet only buy a Marinco marine outlet. with a good plug on the adapter there is no power loss from jiggling, these were designed for the pounding of a boat. Doo sells them for 20% more than a marine store.

my mount came from GPScity.com they sell all the parts as a package for under $40

just ordered a ram mount for my legend. Going to install it in the spot for the accessary guages on my edge. Thanks for all the advice. I am also going to try to use the lithium batteries to avoid wiring it in. :div20:

if you have issues with the lithiums when you first install them stick them in a flashlight for a few minutes. I've not had a problem with the Etrex but sometimes a fully charged lithium causes the 60 CSX to have an issue turning on.

All of these pictures of the ETrex with Ram mounts are blacked out or missing. Can someone please post pics of both so it can help me to decide if I should do the handlebar mount or not. Also, any updates on batteries for the ETrex?

I used to have a RAM mount on the bars but found it wobbled too much and was distracting

So I mounted the RAM adapter directly to the handlebar pad

For batteries I used to have a 2 C cell holder mounted near the muffler to keep them warm figuring the c cells had way more capacity than the AA's. When the external batteries died it switched over to the internals. Didn't work out as planned. When the external batteries died the GPS would switch off if you didn't see the warning and manually switch to internal. So I now use only Energizer Lithium AA's internally. They last far longer than the regular C batteries anyway (when cold). I can usually get 2 full days of riding out of one pair of lithiums.
Looks cleaner without the wire anyway.

Good luck - post up your solution when you finish

Nice mounting to the handlebar pad. You have to cut up much stuff to do that?

I just bought a new etrex vista, and am now currently debating where to stick it.

ps - thanks for the good advice about lithiums not being effected by cold.

Nope, I just used the holder from the RAM mount, removed the ball, and used the same hardware for mounting to the pad. I REMOVED the pad to drill it so no wires would be cut and installed the hardware from the inside. My pad is thick rubber so it's really stable. For a fabric covered pad you would need some kind of backer inside. The only problem is I had to remove the pad at the end of the season to get the holder for motorcycle/boat season.

As for where to put it - just make sure it's not blocking the gages and it has a clear the view of the sky

cool good idea about getting a backer, didnt think of that. I might do a dash. I cant use a windshield bag (my air gets pulled from there), so i think i may follow the trend of putting it up under the windshield.

One nice thing about my vista Hcx is it is NOT touchy at all. I have a garmin streetpilot and it will not work indoors at all. Barely works upstairs by window facing S side.

My hcx picked up about 10-12 satellites in my basement bathroom, middle of the house.

That's what the "H" gets you on the newer Garmin model names...it stands for the high sensitivity receiver. Many people brushed it off as marketing hype when there were introducted, but it is far from hype...they can pick up satellites under heavy cover MUCH, MUCH better than any of the older receivers. I recently did some side by side comparisons myself between a one year old Legend cX and a new Venture HC...they weren't even in the same ballpark. The HC was far superior at drawing in satellites, despite the fact that it's a less expensive model with fewer features.

So to anyone shopping for a Garmin, make darn sure there's an H in the model name somewhere if you don't want signals dropped under heavy cover.
