Okay - I've decided to replace the chain on my ZRT800, since I have the chaincase apart to replace my track. I'm also going to drop a tooth at the top and go with a 23 tooth top gear (stock is 24/39 w/reverse).
My question is: can I still get away with using the stock 72 pitch chain with the slightly smaller top gear? Can the stock tensioner compensate for this reduction in diameter, or will I need to go with a shorter chain?
Hopefully someone can answer this quickly, as I'd like to get everything ordered within the next hour or so...
Thanks !

Yes,, should be able to, but it's going to put a fair kink in the chain,,,R2R

Do you mean a kink from the smaller gear diameter, or a kink from the extra slack around the tensioner?
Should I get a 70 pitch chain, then? Will a 70 pitch be long enough?

Kink from the tensioner taking up the sleck,,,I mostly change both gears, that's why I took reverse off,, 70p may be to short,,not certain, lost my formula for that...R2R

Ahhh...I see. Yeah, I realize there will be a bit more slack, but droping a tooth on the top is easier and more effective than additing teeth on the bottom. Also, my gearing choices on the bottom are limited because I want to keep reverse. I guess I'll go with the stock 72 pitch - if there's too much kink, I can always throw the stock top gear back in there.
Thanks -

It will work OK,, just changing both makes for a more efficent chain angle, they shoud make a 71p chain and things would be easier,, :beerchug: ,R2R
