Hey all. I'm new to the forums but have been riding for a while now. I took the chance on buying a sled on ebay and got what seems to be a nice 98 Polaris XCR 600 with the Snow King Long Track option. I checked it out to see if it was raced and could tell this guy was telling the truth when he said it has been in his family since new. Before I take it out, I would love some opinions of what to do with it before the first long haul. And are there any things to look for when going on my first ride?
Its also has 1.75 inch paddles on the track which should give me some awesome traction. We'll see. Its one heavy beast but i'm hoping to get some good mileage out of it this year. Oh ya..its got 5200 miles on it. Your comments and expertise is appreciated.
Thanks

First thing is to grease everything. Don't forget the grease nipple behind the secondary clutch for the jack shaft bearing.

Check all nuts and bolts to make sure they are tight. Use blue loctite on any you take off.

Also, don't forget to drive way too fast, hit an icy corner, roll it, and break the windsheild off.... twice.

Just like you did with your Indy lite! :div20:

That's what I get for not having carbides like you. Moron

I also bought an 1998 xcr 700 during the summer. I would take out the whole suspension. It looked fine other than a few bearings to replace, until I pulled it out. The front A-arm was snapped in two places. Also look at the water pump bearings, that is also a place of concern.

Actually, removing the suspension is a good practice to get into before every riding season. I find that you can never really tell what condition your suspension is in by laying on the ground looking up, its best just to remove the whole thing, check the tightness of every bolt, bearing, a-arms, etc etc. Good advice!

Ya...I remember having this rattling in my Lite. I took it to a mechanic and he found a bolt rattling around when he took the head off. I don't want that happening again. Those bolts shall be tightened!

Additionally, there is a tear in the seat. Does anyone have some good ideas on how to fix that. My Grandma is coming over and I'm gonna help her try to sew it...but it seems like it's gonna be pretty difficult. It's right at the back of the seat there it meets the ridge (the part that angles up so you don't slide off the sled on an uphill).

I appreciate all your comments. I am gonna try my darndest to look everything over and look at all those things mentioned. Maybe I can convince Cowboy to take a look too when we go out this winter wink.gif

(all those smilies regarding beer makes me a little nervous...do snowmobiliers really like beer that much in general? I just hope we're all responsible on the trails!)

Make Sure all the bolts in the carb are nice and tight so you don't lose a whole tank of fuel in 10 minutes :wut60:

Took my machine out for the first time today around Niverville. It was really fun and got me super excited. We took a risk buying this sled off ebay, but it seems to run really well. The long track makes a huge difference in suspension! My back isn't feelin it at all right now which is a huge difference from riding my other sled (especially seeing we were riding on very bumpy farmers fields...and don't worry, they're relatives whom we've recieved permission to ride on).

The sled was blowin some pretty ugly smoke for the first half hour or so...so I just took it really easy and let it idle most of the time. The guy we bought it from said that it hadn't been ridden in about a year and a half, so I didn't think too much of it. Afterwards, you could see that the exhaust was much cleaner. Thx for the replies (including cowboy) and I look forward to doing lots of miles when the snow finally comes!

:div20:

Now I just need to figure out how to connect my heated shield to the sled. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to do that? I'm sure it's probably obvious and i'll try to figure it out...but some direction would be awesome. I've tried googling it and have come up with nothing.

I think on those older polaris's You connect the Red from your shield cord to the lead comming off the regulator. and then the black lead to ground. The regulator is the little black box around 2 inches long and half in think. ussually mounted near the right footwell. hope this helps :fluffy:

Thanks for the reply. I found that box you were talking about. I tried finding a charge from the regulator with one of those screwdriver-looking charge finders. There was no charge. Are there any suggestions for why this might be? All my hand warmers and lights work perfect. It just doesn't seem to make much sense.

Steve Gault of Gault and son uphostering, used to be in Oakbank, now his son lives there and he lives in a retirement village in outskirts of Winnipeg I believe. Does great work.
