I have a 04 proxr800 and I recently had to remove the crankcase plugs to drain some fuel in it(long story).The question I have is that the plugs are brass and seem to have a taper on them.I thought most engines had regular bolts and aluminum washers(or brass washers)in the cases.So I called the dealer and they said there software shows just plugs instead of bolts.They did not know why either.When I put them back in I used locktite and they went in kind of weird.I had a hell of a time trying to get them straight,but once I got them in they only turned maybe 4-5 times before they started getting snug.So my main question is should I have really cranked them down or should I just snuged them(That is what I did).Why did they put these plugs in here instead of bolts?Is this common on any other sleds?The motor has never been tampered with instead of 1 new cylinder and piston(dropped valve common)It has the steel valves and green&yellow springs in now.But they never touched the case plugs.I just have a hard time trusting those plugs in there.Thanks guys!!!!

Those plugs are NPT threads (National Pipe Thread). They have a 3 degree angle so that it will tighten and seal itself. A good snug feeling should be fine as far as tightness. You could probably search on a torque spec for brass NPT's if you wanted to (that is probably an 1/8 or 1/4 NPT). Generally you would use Teflon tape or paste on these plugs but your parable fine with locktite.

ya your always gonna have exopsed threads and 4-5 turns is plenty. so im sure they were put in right. same thread type as any threaded grease fitting on your sled

They seal better than a bolt or bolt and washer. Having a vacuum leak in your case would be real bad. Every car, quad or sled engine has them in some form.
