Which will have better traction... 144 studs down the middle, or 144 studs (96 middle, 48 outer)? Also, what are the tradeoffs between the two patterns?

down the center wont make the sled "push" so much when cornering.

But won't hook nearly as well. It is a trade off.

If you drag race most the tome put them in the middle and outside.

If you trail ride put them all down the center.

Putting them on the outside is not all that benificial for traction as you might think. Tracks are pretty ridgid these days and even close to the center they bite very well.
My driveway can prove this as my studs down the center only, rip the driveway up the whole center portion of the track.

Plus as mentioned less pushing in turns.

Another downfall is the track is the weakest on the outside band and easy to rip.

Double/single backer pattern all up the center. Only way to go, best traction for trails.

it will push like a mother if you stud the outside, i like to spin the track, so i run 96 down the middle and love it, never pulled a stud out or any other problems..

My Opinion....

Never mind the link...

I like to slide but hooking up is faster, safer and better for the trails. Here is my response on another thread.....

Care to elaborate on Mod?

I think a sled with that kind of horsepower needs a minimum of 144. Woodys recommends 1.325. I studded a track ONCE with the "recommened" stud length. That year we did not get snow until the lakes were completely frozen. I could not hook that sled up at all on the ice. After I put about 50 miles on running back and forth on the ice I pulled every stud. Replaced them with one over the recommended size and got the max. penetration of 3/8". Very much worth it. Night and day difference. Ran fantastic in the trails with a good carbide and a little extra front ski spring pressure. Spent probably six hours doing it and I would do it again.

I just put 144 Woody's 1.450's with the tall nuts in my ProX 136". They are exactly 3/8" over the lug. I put 96 studs in double backers and 48 singles all up the middle. First track I have ever not put studs in the outside. I think with the 136" it will still hook and not slide around corners.

A tad aggressive on the hieght but I like to stop and hook.
