3 deer hunters die in separate accidents
The Associated Press
A deer hunter was found shot to death in Arenac County in a possible hunting accident, while two hunters elsewhere in Michigan died after apparently falling from tree stands, authorities said.
The body of Michael Reyes, of Pinconning, Mich., was found Monday morning by a friend after Reyes didn't return as expected from a hunting trip, the Arenac County sheriff's department said in a statement.
A preliminary investigation indicated the death was an accident, the sheriff's department said.
In Sanilac County, a deer hunter was found dead after falling from a tree stand 18 feet above the ground, the sheriff's department there said. The cause of death was not immediately known, Undersheriff Garry Biniecki said.
Jeffrey C. Atkeson, 47, of Genoa, Ohio, failed to return from hunting Saturday, and deputies found his body Sunday in Moore Township, the department said. He had been hunting with a shotgun, and he had a safety harness for the tree stand, Biniecki said.
And in Hillsdale County, the body of Russell Sutton, 53, of Somerset Township, was found Saturday by friends after he failed to return home from a hunt, the Hillsdale County sheriff's department said.
Sutton had left home Friday afternoon, officials said.
Investigators determined Sutton fell 21 feet from a tree stand, resulting in trauma that caused his death. An autopsy was ordered in the case, The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported Monday.
Firearm deer hunting season in Michigan opened last week and runs through Nov. 30.
