Last night, Friday November 17, 2006, at approximately 7 pm, two males in a Corvette traveling south on Rte. 3 at a high rate of speed; swerved and collided with a gas pump at the Trading Post in the north end of Pittsburg Village. The gas pump was completely knocked off the pump island and the car continued on and hit the front of the Trading Post causing a gaping hole in the wall. The car then rebounded and swung around and hit the building again a little further toward the south end of the building. :augen41:

As of last night, one of the occupants was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was reported to be near death. dunno.gif Alcohol was thought to be a factor. :banghead: :banghead: A full report should be in next Wednesday’s News & Sentinel. :div20: j

Fortunately the Trading Post has been closed at that location and the gas pumps have been shut down for a couple of months.

My God, how does a car make two holes 20' apart on the same wall?
pathfinder58

It was a big hit, slide marks in the road several hundred feet! eclipsee_steering.gif

Very bazaar! wtf.gif Remember I got this information third or fourth hand so, something could have been lost in the translation. dunno.gif If I hear more or anything different than I have posted, I will be sure to up date this thread. :div20:

Wow that is quite an amount of damage to the building...hopefully the other fellow will pull through.

Guess their judgement was a bit more than impaired. WTF, glad no innocent persons got injured or killed as a result. :frech32:

I am not too surprised, that place is in the middle of main street. 3gears.gif

I hope the fellow in the crash pulls thru.
Polarman
Truely hope the other survives. Wonder if a vehicle was pulling out of Back Lake Rd. across the street to make the vet swerve. dunno.gif

Isn't that the place where there is a very steep hill just behind the building, with the Connecticut river right below?? They could easily have ended up in the river.

Here is another account I just read on a friend's website. Again - this is unconfirmed - I do not know if this is accurate or not... dunno.gif

Bad accident in the village last night... Details are rather sketchy but what we've heard is that two men, one from Las Vegas ( In Pittsburg????) and the other from Florida (Pittsburg??) were at the Buck Rub in a Corvette... They left there and were traveling down Rt. 3 at speeds of 80-100 mph... the driver lost control by the Trailside Rental place, went sideways into the Pittsburg Trading Post (now vacant)...took out a gas pump...once inside the store, the car did a cartwheel and exited the building on the same side...Actually they went in the building to the left of the door and went out on the right side of the door... The driver of the vehicle had massive head trauma and died somewhere enroute... we don't know the condition of the passenger... the corvette was flattened out and was towed to the back of Brook's Chevrolet in Colebrook... This happened around 7:00pm on Friday night...

thats basically what i was told. out of control at the garage before trading post.

Channel 9 News said one of the guys was from Columbia NH??? of course that really doesn't mean anything.
Look's like the insurance company will own it now! We almost bought the trading post before we bought the Motel, and IMO I don't think that building could withstand a hit like that, and still be structurally safe.
I to hope the guy lives!

PS What happened, last time we were up that way there was a sign up that the old owners were re-opening
the store???

They did in fact re-open with some of the old employees, but closed about four weeks later, moved down to the General Store and Moriah's use to be and purchased the name of "The Pittsburg Trading Post" which is now in the old General Store. They are doing something with Moriah's at the moment and I beleive it is going to be a "deli'" type place to eat. One positive spin off of this latest merry go round in the village is the owner of the block, who closed snowmobile traffic through his yard last year, has agreed to open it up again becasue of the deli in his building. At the same time the Pittsburg school has requested the trail going to that yard be moved all the way off school property, in an attempt to preserve some extensive re-building of the atheltic fields in that area, so look for a re-route totally in the woods heading towards the new location of the Trading Post, Dube's Pit Stop (only fuel in the village).

I hope that hasn't confused too many people, its getting hard to keep up with the changes that lately have been rapid fire occurences.

Hopefully the 06/07 maps will have the reroutes?

Heard the driver of the car is the guy that owned Columbia Cabins on rt 3 in Columbia. 46 years old

Ch 9 update
Man from Columbia was the driver - he is the one who died. Passenger is now in stable condition.

80 + MPH on that stretch of road ? :frech32: I have never been up there in the summer, but in the winter 30-40 MPH is a challenge.

The guy had just bought the vette that day apparently. I know the guy he bought it from.
