Im thinkn about startin a plowing buisness for the winter, well im goin to...
and i was just wonder if any of you plow?
and if any one had any idea of a rough amount of how many times a season we get plowable storms? (Residential) (im talkn lewiston, Auburn, lisbon, brunswick area)

I can get all the driveways i want through the Landscape company i work for... what would you say is a good amount of driveways one person could take on? I was thinkn some wheres around 20? give or take

I would think a lot more than that depending on the length of the driveway.

Well my friend plows driveways and he says people can get really picky about stuff and it can take extra long if they change their minds or get pissed. I mean if u don't work 4 any psychos like he does than ur prolly all set but still id say alittle less than 20 is prolly good. and my parents plow our driveway and it takes a long time cuz its pretty long. so it depends on the length too i guess.

this is true, i cant forget that you have to go back over them sometimes if u have to go out plowing during the storms... extra time right there.

Depends on how far apart they are and how long (as mentioned)

Offer your clients multiple pricing options. as example:
All season: $(pick a price) and define the season.
Monthly: $(pick a price)
Per Storm: $

just remember everytime you want to ride becasue it snows you won't be able to because you have to plow. Big trip planned and storm in the forecast you can't go because you have to plow. I ride with a couple of guys who plow and more often than not it ruins there riding chances.

i pay 235 for the season, dirt drive so plowed at 3 or more inches of snow. Price does not include sading. Driveway is 100 feet long with a parking area for 4 cars plowed.

20 is a good number if they are close and you dont have to worrie about getting to work. i work with a guy and together we have about 35 give or take a few each year. its true about not getting to sled every storm all the nice deep ones i have to go out some of the small ones i can pawn it off on him and i get to ride. the other thing to remember is that peopole that have to be at work want them plowed so they can leave but if its still snowing then you will have to come back again to clean it up also if the city plows the road after you then you may have to go back depends on how pickey they are. oh ya it beats the shit out of your truck too hard on the trans and the frame. just my 2 cents, if i had to do it again i would only get family accounts and i just may find some nice young kid and pay him by the storm to go out if i can get my self a second truck so i dont have to worrie about him beating it up

Well i was thinkn about buying another truck just for plowing, but it would have to be an older one because of money, and i would just wory about it breaking or not starting (I can get an older truck with a plow already on it for about the same price as i can buy a plow for my truck)
Im goin to be starting my own Landscape buisness not this coming summer but the one after, so plowing will be the winter part of the buisness, and even right now in the winter im doin Carpentry and the boss is my dad so if i have to plow he dont give a shit

I've been plowing since I was tall enough to see over the steering wheel and I'am going to list the 3 best noises in the world.

1. The silence when you shut down the piece of equipment you run.
2. The sound of the first beer.
3. The sound of a plow going by your house as you are opening a beer or putting a log on the fire or doing both of the above and you did'nt have to plow that storm.

The 3 worst noises are

1. The phone ringing in the middle of the night to call you in to plow.
2. The noise a plow makes when in comes contact with something solid.
3. Silence when something that is supposed to run and does'nt like a fan for the heater, windshield wipers,
plow pump, radio or the engine for what your running.

Feel free to put those list in any order you like :beerchug:

but if youve been doin it for so long there must be some good reason??? dunno.gif
Skidor
The best reason:

Dunkin Donuts at 4 am, nobody else out on the road and snow falling.

The sledding season is simply too short these days...RIDE ON!!! :fluffy:
Doobraap
You could always just drive around looking for people having a hard time shoveling each storm. Take $20 and do a few passes. No schedule and no commitments.

I work for three nights and then I'm off for three, which makes my days off rotate through the week. If I miss riding a storm it's a minimum of only three days and I get a ton of weekday riding in, which is where it's at :div20:

I guess what I'm getting at is that I'll have plenty of time for quality riding even though my work doesn't consist of plowing driveways. In my opinion, being a snowmobilier that doesn't have to work in the winter would kick ass. You currently have that life and want to give it up to plow some driveways :banghead:
