Hey i was wondering whats a good 96 stud pattern down the center for a 98 XC 700 121 track with a aggressive clutch setup in it?

just did my wifes xc700 in the classic "v" pattern it starts out with a very close v and as you move it down the pattern gets wider everytime you move the template, do this 3 times and then repeat the small v and it starts over again.

Agressive Clutch set-up on a 700...and only 96 studs???
I did the same 96 *V* pattern.. but I staggered them to leave the middle 2" of track empty. I left the *V* closer to the edges to get maximum bite.

Hey so when you say for the *V* now for the tip of the V like if you think of the studs on the bottom of the track on the ground does the point of the V point toward the skis or backward? Are you all thinking of something like this...

96 short studs=no good. 96 maximum length = good traction. v pattern wide as possible, point towards the skis, opening towards the rear. In one magizine i read, 96 studs on a ZR 900 with good results, if the driver has good throttle control. :div20:

nice... Well actually.. with studs on the ground. It's points to the rear and wide end towards skis.
but I don't think it matters

Hmmm... anyone know which way is better? Also when i put in my studs do i have to take the suspension out or can i just leave it in?

I think that Stud Boy pattern sucks. It only has 8 lines then repeats. My template has 18 lines then repeats. It's the same as Mach Z1 is talking about.
I am using double backers and found that the last two are too close to the center so flipped the backer to the outside.
I was told the V goes the same direction as the track. So when looking at the top of the track from the back you see the V. I also don't know if it makes a huge difference....

From what I have been told, you want to try and have as many scratch lines as possible. When I did mine, I worked it out so all the studs were staggered so no two studs repeat in the same line. It took a lot of measuring but it works well. JMO

When you do the *V*. slighty stagger the studs...So you get a high *Magical scratchline count.
When you mark the holes and drill them...all the studs are going to be a little off anyway. You'll get more than 8 scratchlines.
You're only doing 96 studs, you can only do a couple patterns. There is nothing wrong with the *v* pattern (Which has been around before Studboy)

I once read that the V should point towards the skis (when on the ground). So when going into a turn, the loaded side (outside) of the track will have more scratch lines spread out. Picture if the track was swinging out in a turn, if its facing the other way the lines will but very close together or line up in the direction of the 'fishtail'. It made sense to me.
As far as studding.. i would either use double backers or plastic single backers. From what i have heard its near impossible to have pull-outs with doubles and that you end up breaking studs in extreme cases. I have plastic single backers and have no pull-outs. I end up breaking the backer and just check the track over once in a bit and remove any broken backers or else you will loose the stud. The backer breaks off and the stud nut ends up being pushed through only. You can then just restud the hole though but no rips in the track. :div20:

I've got 96 on angled double diggers on my 800 and it hooks up real good. I used the skidoo snowcross template to lay em out.
I have double diggers on mc xc track and havent had any pull out yet (9500 miles on that track), but have bent some and broke a couple off.
Good throttle control goes along way to make em live.
