Full Version: Proper clutch offset and alignment with torque arm installed?

I was wondering if someone could help me? I have to replace the front PTO side motor mount on my 2001 800 XCR. I also bought a torque arm for the front of the engine which I will be installing along with the new mount. I have a Polaris service manual for 2001 and the clutch offset and alignment adjustments in the manual are based on not using a torque arm on the front of the engine. The service manual says to run the primary slightly out of alignment with the secondary on the basis that the engine shifts on the mounts as you hit the throttle and will then align itself when the clutches are shifting. What I am wondering is if having a torque arm on the front of the engine if I should align the primary clutch almost straight on with the secondary since the engine won't shift near as much with the arm or if I should just run the stock offset and alignement specifications that are listed in the service manual?

Please help! It would be greatly appreciated!

The torque arm should be installed"loosely". Meaning not having preloaded tension on the engine at rest . The engine should be allowed to move just a little before the torque arm stops it's travel.I set the torque arm so that it will just jiggle when I move it with my fingers.

I am in the process of doing the exact same thing on a 00' xcr. I'm replacing the double studded front mounts that always break with the 2 peice style older ones they used to use with a through -bolt . I think it will be a better setup.

Use the torque arm to hold the engine as close as possible to the exact c-c and with no misalignment. Use 5/8" offset dimension.
My 800 XCR has had the torque arm since day one set exactly like this with great belt life and no broken mounts. Yes, it slightly increases the transmission of engine vibrations to the chassis, but gives best performance.
Use a torque arm with hard durometer bushing at one end like the HPE Super Link P#900-559 $72.95.
Floating the secondary side to side is important also.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help. So in theory what I am being told by this drawing is that with a torque arm installed I want to keep the alignment almost straight between the two clutches since the torque arm is holding the engine straight anyhow?

Where do I find the center to center distance specification? I have a service manual does it tell in there? Thanks!

xcr 800 is 12" ctr-ctr

xc 800 11.5" ctr-ctr
