Sounds like good news that is for sure... any snow that they get out there is a good sign.... I am hoping that they get some decent snow for around February... that is when me and the guys will be heading out there hopefully... On our trip my friend totalled out his 600 which was my old sled but he is looking at getting an 800 after that incident.... Hopefully all comes around for him and we will have another person to go with out in the hills... The more people the better i always say... It is always a blast out there... the Horns were fun and everything but it is just something about the Hills that makes it unique... I have a few pictures from the horns that i will probably post on here... Nothing good didn't take the digital camera with because i seem to be falling off my sled more than riding it when i get in the powder... The pictures were taken with a cheap toss away kodak camera so the quality isn't top but it was good enuff for me... Keep me posted on the news for the hills... Thanks :beerchug: snowfall.gif

6:scan0004.jpg]Click to view attachment These are some of the pictures from the Horns.. We had a crappy Kodak camera so they didn't turn out the best but they are pictures i guess... Hopefully they post well on the forum... The last one is of the carnage for the day... Where cody is standing is the rock that he hit... The sled is where it landed and he landed about another 15 feet from there... It was a perty good wreck to see... We were up on top of the hill that is in the background watching him the entire time... Only thing that was hurt besides the sled was his pride but that gets taken from us on a daily occurence so it makes no difference... When i go to the hills i will take the digital camera and get some better pictures... The meadow behind us we went in afterwards and there was decent powder in there about waist deep in most spots...

Called Trailshead today, 5" of fresh snow today as of 7PM and still snowing. We booked rooms for this weekend. Might as well try it out, more snow than we have at home, if nothing else we will get drunk! :beerchug: I will try to get some pictures to post up.

After riding up in the Hills last Saturday and checking the trail report all week and seeing the snow amounts they have received this week, riding will/should be pretty good this weekend. We did put in at Trailshead last weekend just so everyone knows. I plan on trying to get at least 2 days out of this weekend and will put in at Trailshead. Was told by my parts guy that majority of the snow was near the Moon area, hope on Trail 1 and head South. I can't confirm it but according to him and the trail reports it sound very accurate. See yall out there, we will be on a 96 XLT and a 02 EFI ZR 600. Should be in neighbors crew cab 2500 Chevy, white 4X4.
big_bear35
Sounds like good news... When you get back hopefully post some pics on here or else let us know how the trails are... I am hoping for some good snow when we go out there... It is one of the best places to ride that is for sure... I like it out there quite a bit seems to always be fun on the trails and the night life is a blast... My brother has some rooms reserved at the super duper 8 for mardi gras but i don't know if i can go out there around that time or not... The ole lady's birthday is around that time and a guy could get in trouble... last year i went out for prez weekend and that was right around that time as well... Who knows... Best of luck on finding snow and bring us back a good report... If there isn't that much snow i know the Silverado serves an awesome prime rib and snow crab for 12.95.... :drunk: :celebrating:

I will post the conditions Saturday night if I get a chance. Having a party for some of my folks that have just come back from being deployed. :celebrating:

Hey Nighttrain are you with the Guard or are you from Ellsworth? Just wondered, I am deployed from EAFB to the sand box right now, hope to be back the first week of Feb to get some riding in. Just wondered if there were some guys from the base doing some riding that I have not met yet...

Bear are you still looking for an F5 for the lady? Seen one from Sioux Falls last night on www.powerbrokersinc.com 2003 F5 Sno Pro. I bought a sled from him last year, pretty good guy. just thought I would pass it along...
big_bear35
Thanks Bad Ram... yeah i am not decided if i want to go and get an F5 or if i want to purchase a wrecked F7 and fix it up... I am in the deciding stage right now... After being out in the horns i am also tempted at finding a hold over M7 151 Green and purchasing that this summer... I have a few things floating through the ole noggin right now... Still looking around... I seen that there are a few nice ZR 800's going for perty cheap as well... Possibly take them and go with a 136... I don't know i like to tinker in the garage and stuff so i am not sure what i will be doing.... Thanks for the info though i will check it out... If it is a good deal a guy can't pass them up cuz they come along ever so slowly... Thanks... any word on the conditions out in the hills yet... Anxious about that we are looking for either the 9-11 or something like that... Get some rooms in sturgis and trailer back in forth... That Featherlite pulls like a dream behind the lanche with 4 sleds on... Cruised home about 75 or 80 from the Horns and got about 11 MPG can't complain at all.. Thanks guys :alien: afro.png
Bad Ram
I know what you mean about being on the fence as to what to buy. Been thinking about a hold over M6 or M7 myself, cant seem to commit to an orange sled so would have to be green or black. Dont want to have to buy new gear as everything is green/black already also. Hard to think about dropping 7 grand on a sled when I have 2 that run just fine now and have not been out of the garage yet this year. Should be home the first week of Feb so if you guys make it up maybe we will see you there. By the website I would say that the trails/riding should have been pretty good this weekend so hopefully they get more snow and it stays cold...
big_bear35
Yeah it is a tough decision to make to say the least... I would like to go ahead and get me the M7 but i am not sure yet how much i will use it totally... I don't know what would be the most practical purchase... I will have to see how badly the dealers want to get rid of the old iron that has been in crates for a few years.... If i get a good deal i will probably get one... That is how my brother got his ZR800 he purchased his as a hold over in 05 as an 01 hold over and he didn't pay diddly for his... bran spankin new just was sitting around and that is an awesome sled... Yeah i hope that the report out in the hills is perty good... I am waiting to hear from my buddies back home on when we are going to head out for sure but hopefully know sometime this week... Any new reports i would appreciate greatly... Thanks frantics.gif clover.png
samatt
I am looking at heading out the last weekend of January if work goes good and the get more snow. Maybe catch up with some of you if your heading out then. May just be the wife and I or just myslef.
big_bear35
Hey Samatt are you going to be taking the switchback out there??? Those are some awesome sleds polaris hit it on the nose with that sled for sure... I like them the best out of all of the crossover sleds.... I see that you are from moorhead... been riding anywhere around here at all... I haven't even took mine out around here yet... doesn't seem to be any snow anywhere close that is worth riding on... Hopefully out in the hills it continues to get deaper.... The insane cold tempuratures don't really help anything at all but it is better than the warm ones that melt the snow... If you head out there post up some pics or let us know how the snow is doing out there... looking towards the second weekend in Feb i beleive... Thanks clover.png brr.gif

The snow in the hills is pretty good, nothing like last year though. Rode Saturday and Sunday. There were a few trails that thin in areas but for the most part it was really good. Off trail was pretty good. I said I would post some pics but they went down the drain, literally, buddy washed his digital that the pics were on. We got a little over 100 miles Sat. and 50-60 yesterday. Had some trouble with one of the sleds having a broken shock and had to rent one. Rental place gave us one of those new Phazers, nice sled but we all had mixed feelings about it. BADRAM, yes, I am from Ellsworth. Active duty and I work in 410. I haven't rode with anyone from the base. I usually go with my neighbor. We should all go when you get back! Be safe!
samatt
Bear, the Switchback is up for sale. If I still have it, it will go, if not I will run my Edge 136. If I can move the SB, I will hold out for the rumored IQ 136 or get a carry over and streach it out. My riding habits push me to a coupled 136.

We went down to the Fort Ransom area about a week ago. There was good snow. I suspect we will be heading that way this coming weekend. Was going to go this weekend, but just a tad on the cool side. We would have gotten alot of miles on, but the buddy's Cat blew the track.
Bad Ram
Nighttrain I will have to try and get with you when we get back, hopefully the cold weather and the snow holds till then. Couple of us riders over here right now that hope to get a few miles in when we get back...
nightrainjoe
I hear ya BAD RAM, see ya when you make it back. Weather looks fairly good the rest of the week with chance of snow Thursday.
big_bear35
Anyone hear about the Deadwood/Lead area.... I heard that they had school 2 hours late today... Wondering if they got a good dumping on them or what all happened out there... We haven't got anything up here in the frozen tundra of the red river valley.... Still waiting to find out from the guys back home when we are going to bounce out there... might be Sat, Sun, Monday of Prez weekend or some other time.... Waiting to hear about the conditions.... Hopefully they keep getting snow each week that always helps.... anyone hear anything about the meadows out there if they are getting full or are still perty thing... Anyone rode the High Line yet... how is that??? Thanks frantics.gif tongue.png
Bad Ram
According to the SDGFP site they got another 4-7 inches on the trails, most of it around Rec Springs and Trails Head. Terry peak says they got 8 inches in the last 24 hours. weather is forecasting 50% chance for snow thru the weekend so things are looking up...
big_bear35
Spoke to two of my brothers and looks like we might be heading out there for Mardi Gras!!!! just wondering if anyone else will be going out there during that time or who all is planning on going out there... I am looking at that weekend going with them and then possibly heading out there on the first weekend in March witht he other guys that we went to Wyo with..... Should be a blast just wondering who is all going to be out there during that weekend... If i am going we will be on the trails most of the day and then partying like crazy at night... Thanks thumbsup.png
Fullmetaljacket
we are heading out on Feb 12th thru the 16th. Staying near Deer Mountain. Its a first for all 8 of us going. Please keep posted the conditions
kyle
OK folks. Let's hear how the snow was for the weekend. We are planning on heading out Thursday if it's decent riding. What did you think? Thanks.

Kyle
samatt
Kyle,

Wea re also looking at heading out on Thursday night. Just need some confirmation it will be work the trip. Looks like the temps are going to up into the 40's so that might kill some stuff. I called Trailshead and Rec Springs Saturday night, and they said people are riding and reporting some good stuff. Trailshead said you really have to watch the off trail stuff. Stumps and rocks are covered, but not that well.

Please post any information you get up here, so I can help to make my decision and I will do likewise.

What part of MN you coing out of?
kyle
We're in SW MN. Need to decide if heading to hills or Hurley. An area around Hurley is ok, so will go there if we have to. Would rather do the hills if it's decent. Must have been a ton of people there last weekend. Hopefully someone will tell us how it was.
nightrainjoe
Went Saturday and put in at Spearfish canyon. Trails were pretty good considering the warm temps. Not sure how much they got Sat. night but I only got a dusting at my house in Black Hawk. Off trail riding was pretty good with the snow that Savoy had (something close to 10 inches). There were some thin areas on trail 1 but should be okay after the groomer hits them again. I would say just save the site in your favorites and check it daily to stay up on the conditions. http://www.sdgfp.info/parks/recreation/sno...ailconHills.asp
kyle
Yea, I watch that, but it's always better to hear from someone that has been riding. Thanks.
nightrainjoe
I hear ya there. I look at the site daily and I only live about 25 miles from Deadwood. It is a very accurate report and is usually updated very regularly. But I will post what it was like when I go to give yall an idea of what the conditions are really like. I hope this warm weather this week doesn't hurt the trails too bad. If anyone needs anymore information just let me know.
Fullmetaljacket
So, just how much snow was lost today with the temps at or near 50. Hear they are talking that for tomorrow again. Hoping they get dumped on in the next 2 weeks, or its michigan for me.
nightrainjoe
Not sure how much they have lost the last 2 days, I know it is 60+ outside today. Not good. Hopefully there is no one riding on the trails when it is this warm and tearing it up. Temps are supposed to be pretty cold Friday night so I hope all is well with the snow. They have not updated the trail conditions in 2 days so I hope that is not because of the warm weather.
opcruzer
They need another foot after this week for all that melted, then another foot to make some good off trail riding and then another foot just because.

IT WILL COME THE WINTER ISNT OVER YET IT WILL ONLY TAKE ONE OF THOSE 50 INCH DUMPS AND WE'LL ALL BE IN HEAVEN AGAIN
BUT IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE FORCAST SAYS NO SNOW IF WE COULD GET A GOOD BATCH OF SNOW NOW WHATS OUT THERE WILL MAKE AN ECCELENT (OOPS) BASE
big_bear35
I hope they get dumped on over presidents weekend... There are usually quite a few sleds out there during that and it is perty decent sledding out there usually.... It is snowing right now in Fargo we are forcasted to get about 2 inches... Hopefully some of this system swirls up over there and they get a good dumping on them... We really don't have anything except bitter cold and the wind... Hope to catch you guys out there... Keep me posted on the trails and if anyone goes out please post some pics.... Thanks clover.png brr.gif
CRASHMAN
