I 2001 zr 800 with a gas gage on the left side of the tank . I bought a used seat and tank but this tank does not have a gage on the side of the tank. It has a plate in the top center with a few wires coming out of it .Im thinking that this is for a electronic gage ???? Has anyone ever switched from a manual gage to an electronic ? If so how can I do this ??

Its more than likely electric our 2001 zrt 600 came with a factory electric....

could you holesaw it and use your old gauge? that would be cheap.
blizzard01
I was thinking of trying that . But wanted to see if anyone had ever done it. How would I get the old one out?
stronger800
Take the old one out first. they just pop in and out, tight fit with an oring. get it warm with a hairdryer or just extra good and warm in the garage, spray it with wd-40 (works super with tight plastic and rubber) and then pry it out slowly with a screw driver. reach inside and feel it, maybe push up a bit on the inside why another guy runs the pry bar, easy job. If there is a good spot (should be about the same tank right) then just drill a hole the same size (or a bit smaller to start) and pop back in. Oil tank sending units are the same way.

Just be cautious drilling the tank with an electric drill as the brushes in your drill can create sparks. Not sure on the correct way to vent a plastic tank but you'll want to be cautious. Gas fumes+spark = insurance claim - not for you but for the wife!

Sort of like the fella who uses a lighter to check the fuel level in his tank at night. He couldn't tell how much fuel was in the tank but everyone for 5 miles around did!

On cars years ago we used to use exhaust gas running through the tank to displace the oxygen so we could weld on them. Never blew up but then again I wouldn't do it today! Funny how as you get older safety becomes more of an issue. I've seen or done almost every stupid thing so I have a large book of lessons learned LOL. :frech32:

Why not go with the old style gauge on the stick.............way more accurate / assume the tank has the small hole.
stronger800
Ummmm, thats what we're telling him, drill hole , insert stick gauge. Scott, I would have never thought about the drill brushes, Very Very cautious of you. I've seen guys change jets, fuel lines and entire tanks while smoking. I dont smoke.

If you're going to drill it use an air drill.

I going to see if i can find a gas cap with the gauge in it. Thanks for all the help I will let you know how Imake out.
