Full Version: FST noise when slowing down

I finally got to take the new FST out for a quick ride around the property this weekend and I noticed some odd noises and I am wondering if it is normal. When letting off the throttle after getting some speed I notice a grinding/clanking sound when rolling to a stop without using the brakes. I don't know if it just the brakes being rusted or if it is something in the chaincase. Has anyone else noticed this? It is only when rolling to a stop that you really hear it. Thanks for any info!!

Are you sure it isn't the exhaust gate dumping off excess pressure? If it is grinding, sounds like gear mesh problems. Did you get the updates on the sled? Who did the work? Have you adjusted the chain tensionizer?

It is a 07, I hope I don't need updates done yet. No I did not check the chain tension, I figured that should be right from my dealer. It does sound like gear smashing though in some ways but it seems to run fine. I only notice it when I am slowing down by coasting!!

I noticed the exact same thing "after" the reverse gear update, which you have of course. It is not always as noticable. I actually forgot about it till you brought it up. If it does not get any louder, I would not be concerned.

I am only going from memory here, but I believe that your manual states that the chain tensioner needs to be adjusted from time to time, and this sure sounds like it could be the issue. Maybe not, but adjusting it would remove that from the list of things.

I will give that a try. I don't know when I will be able to run it again, all the snow melted from this weekend. Hopefully soon, and hopefully no major problems with the machine. I remember a post a month or two ago that talked about something similiar so I don't know if this is just a characteristic of the machine or if it is a problem. Hopefully the 1st is the case!! If anyone else notices this please post. Think snow and have a great day!!

I'm kind of deaf, but the guys who have riden my sled (o6 Classic with up dates) say you can hear things that the 2 stroke motor covers up. Chaincase, brake rotor, clutch noise, etc..

That noise you hear is the sound of depreciation. It always sounds awful. :cn:

Personally I would let the dealer adjust the chain tension. If you happen to overtighten it and something happens you will be at fault.

Just my 2¢

You would have to be pretty darn stupid to overtighten it if you follow the owners manual. If something were to happen it would be covered under warranty.

Tell us how you really feel, it's not emotionally healthy to hold back :div20:

Turn the secondary in the normal direction (this gets all the slack in front of the tensioner) Back off the locking nut. Then tighten adjusting bolt finger tight, back off 1/4 turn, lock it down.

The brake pads make lots of noise on these things. Sounds like what you described.

Try this repair, it seems to help the noise with no effects on braking so far. When I looked at the 07's I didn't notice any polaris fix for this annoying rattle!!
