Well tonight I'm gonna be throwing in some new clutch weights and I was wondering if there is a way of changing them without removing the primary clutch from the sled? My buddy is borrowing my clutch puller and I don't have a helping hand to compress the spring afterwards if I pulled the clutch off. Any helpful suggestions on changing the weight without removal?
Thanks

i never need a hand compressing the springs. just throw a towel on the ground and kneel on the cover and screw some of the bolts in and tighten down after you have a few put in to hold it

There tools available from many sources to compress the clutch while on the sled, and a device to hold the clutch open while compressed, to remove the flyweights. I wouldn't continue to remove the clutch mounting bolt as the threads stretch after a couple times, and may break the bolt when driving.
Check out Hi Performance Engineering, they are one of many who sell what's needed, --we make our own.

You don't have to remove the clutch from the engine nor do you have to remove the spring to change weights.
It's easy to make a quick tool to compress the spring. get a bolt about 4 inches long with the same thread as the clutch puller. You should be able to get one at a good hardware store. You will also need a piece of pipe about 1.25 inch diameter and about 2.5 inhes long and a large flat washer.First, remove the clutch bolt. Then install the bolt through the flat washer then the pipe and screw it into the clutch threads. As you turn the bolt it will depress the spring. You only have to deprss it 1/2 inch or so to get the weights to come out.

Here's a quick way to change weights with the clutch still on the sled.

Take the belt off.
Use a pry bar or the like and pry the clutch open far enough to insert a 3/8 drive socket extension between the roller area and the cover. This will hold the clutch open just enough to remove the pins and re/re the weights.
When you're done pry the cover open slightly and remove the extension.
Pry only inside the clutch and NEVER against any machined surfaces.
Best to do it between the spider and the casting.

OF COURSE it IS entirely possible for you to get your fingers caught in there and or wreck something.................Thought I'd throw that in there before some cry baby stated the obvious!

PS I've done it thousands of times without any of the above

get one of these or make one. use big screw driver or pry bar to close sheaves then put clip on and change weight then take clip off. clutch tool
